Nautica – Spinnaker Sale as a Symbol of Accomplishment
In 1994, Nautica clothing company added watches to their already impressive catalogue. The essential strategy was to construct remarkably crafted timepieces associated with the company’s name (“Nauticus” is a Latin word for a ship). Nautica is inspired with mankind’s exploration of world that was result of conquering seas. This is underlined with company’s logo, a spinnaker sale, which can be associated with action, adventure and classicism.
Nautica was founded in 1983 in New York as a clothing manufacturer that produced only men’s sailing Nautica jackets. However, since the company and its founder, designer David Chu have had great success, Nautica has started to diversify. Despite modest beginnings, company’s popularity has rapidly grown and Nautica has commenced introducing more and more items.
That sort of strategy brought to introduction of sports watches for men. Since these timepieces were originally intended for nautical adventures, they have been equipped with large and easy readable dials, supplemented with subdials that provide additional information. Despite their resistant construction, they could also be considered as fashionable enough to be worn in the corporate world.
To resist harsh conditions on sea adventures, Nautica watches needed to be functional and to include functions like water resistance. Company succeeded in its mission of crating reliable timepieces that also included classic elements, combined with additional modern functions.
New Owners, Old Strategy
In 2003, VF Corporation from North Carolina bought Nautica, but that didn’t change the initial idea of constructing timepieces with extraordinary craftsmanship. American company continued to introduce watches in various designs and different case materials. Today, there is an impressive collection of Nautica watches in a wide range of designs and shapes, which are associated with different lifestyles and tastes.
Nautica watches for men are sorted in three categories, depending on the material of strap. All nautical enthusiasts can choose from three series: Metal, Leather and Sports (which feature watches with synthetic and canvas straps).
Though there are far more models of men’s watches, Nautica also has a line of watches for women, which have additional style and elegance, besides being dependable and functional.
Renowned for adventurous approach, Nautica showed its philosophy by sponsoring Annual Nautica New York City Triathlon. This Olympic Distance race consists of 1500m swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run. Over 3000 fearless athletes swim in Hudson River, than ride their bikes along Manhattan’s West Side highway and finally dash through New York’s Central Park. The 11th Annual Nautica New York City Triathlon is scheduled for the 7th of August 2011.
