As it is probably well-known, Victorinox Swiss Army started off as one of two manufacturers who had rights to produce famous Swiss army knives. However, once the patent expired, and other companies became eligible to make these products as well, Victorinox had to diversify the palette of products and this was exactly how its watches came to existence. The first model that Victorinox launched in 1989 was named Original and it became one of the best sellers of the brand. Subsequently, the Swiss firm launched new incarnations of the model, and the latest of them is Active Original Chronograph timepiece we are now reviewing. The watch draws its inspiration heavily from the original design, but also incorporates some novelties. It runs on quartz and features a dynamic and military-inspired design which is mostly visible through the choice of colors and straps.
The latest version of the company’s original model preserves some of the recognizable characteristics that were included in the first watch Victorinox made, namely its round case made from plastic with a nylon fiber middle case. In accordance with the latest trends, the newest version of Original is slightly larger (3 mm) and equals to 40 mm. Additionally, unlike the first model, this one is made with a chronograph function that allows measurements with the accuracy of 1/10th of a second. The latest version also includes a bezel made from aluminum.
The vertically-brushed dial of the watch is unfortunately guarded with a mineral crystal which downgrades its quality, but reduces the price and makes it more affordable ($450). It includes large Roman numerals for three and nine o’clock positions, while the other position includes bar-shaped hour markers. Its subsidiary chrono counters are used for measurements of small seconds, intervals to 30 minutes, while the third one shows the 10ths of a second. There are also three hands (as it is common for Original models) and hour and minute hands are partially skeletonized and partially covered with luminous coating. Unlike the majority of recent watches by Victorinox Swiss Army, the dial of Original Chronograph from the Active collection is not made with an inner scale that shows military time. There is also a date display aperture at the four o’clock position.
The watch runs on ETA G10.211 chronograph quartz movement with 4 jewels and it is 13 ¼ lignes wide. As Victorinox Swiss Army Original Chronograph is made with a screw-in case-back, it can withstand pressures up to 100 meters below the surface. The wristlets of choice are nylon NATO straps that are slid through spring bars on both ends under the case. These kinds of straps that were originally used by the British army were created in order to be more secured and to prevent the loss of the band, even in the extreme conditions. Each of the versions of Original Chronograph timepiece is made with straps that match the color of the dial.
There are four available variations of the timekeeper. The model 241531 is in khaki green color, the next one 241532 is navy gray, the 241533 is desert beige, while the last one of them, the 24534 has its dial and strap in commando black color.
