The latest member of the Ulysse Nardin’s Classic Collection is an exquisite champlevé minute repeater dubbed the North Sea. This novelty reveals a realistic depiction of offshore drilling rigs rising from the ocean set on its beautiful champlevé enameled dial.
The scenery on its gorgeous dial shows a dramatic red sky as it highlights the detailed industrial structure, which rises wonderfully from the black sea. Also, there is another glistening champlevé rig in the background which is depicted as it works its way through the sea.
The champlevé enamel technique is a complex process which is mastered by only a handful of craftsmen worldwide. This procedure requires the engraver to define the design on gold plate, cautiously creating the desired image in three dimensions. After that, the enameller lays down the different-colored enamels before firing the piece in a kiln. Lastly, the engraver is once more engaged to further work the visible metal after the dial has been polished. The champlevé enamel technique was introduced in the 12th century.
The outer ring features minimal black indexes. Depending on the model, the streamlined hour and minute hands are crafted from either rose or white gold.
The beating heart of the North Sea Minute Repeater is the in house-manufactured caliber UN-73 hand-winding mechanical movement which is tooled with a minute repeater function. The amazing new minute repeater moves and sounds to indicate the hours, quarter hours, and minutes. The structural gold cranes are actually the Jaquemarts. These animated figures come to life to indicate the time both audibly and visually.
This caliber is known for its crystalline chimes and amazing timekeeping performance. The impeccable mechanism also features the automatic chime activation system. The movement is capable to store enough energy to keep the watch tracking the time for approximately 36 hours. The inner beauty of the movement is visible through a screwed sapphire case-back.
Ulysse Nardin North Sea Minute Repeater is beautifully crafted in gold. There is a choice between 18-karat rose gold and 18-karat white gold model (their referent numbers are 736-61/E2-OIL and 739-61_E2-OIL). The case measures 42mm in diameter and it is constructed to provide decent water resistance up to 30 meters (about 100 feet).
The North Sea Minute Repeater comes with a black leather strap, ending with a matching folding buckle. The new Ulysse Nardin’s timepiece is produced in the limited series of 28 pieces.
