Ulysse Nardin unveiled several timepieces with the Sonata complication. This month, the Swiss-based watchmaker presents its newest watch that combines classical beauty with highly functional complications.
The new Classic Sonata is an alarm watch tooled with cathedral gongs and a dual-time function, which makes it more complicated and intricate than a typical alarm watch. Its dual-time function makes it a perfect choice for globetrotters and travelers that travel through multiple time zones.
As you can see on these images, the redesigned Dual Time complication appears at the 6 o’clock position and it comes with the instant time zone adjustor that makes the manual corrections easier. The adjustments can be done in both directions – forwards and backwards – by simply pressing the pushers to change the position of the hour hand.
The alarm complication is located between 12 and 2 o’clock position, boasting a 12h or 24h alarm setting, which means that the alarm can be set for both a.m. and p.m. The adjustment of the alarm is done via the second crown placed at the 9 o’clock position. A dedicated hand which is set at the 10 o’clock position shows whether or not the alarm is activated. Furthermore, the alarm is synchronized with the Dual Time system when traveling, thus making everything even more functional. There is also a large date window which is set at the 4 o’clock position.
Ulysse Nardin Classic Sonata features the partially-striped blue dial which is accented with faceted dagger-styled hour markers. The blue and silver color scheme of the dial is a perfect choice in my opinion.
The latest Sonata model is housed in an elegant 44mm case. The mid-case, crowns and pushers are crafted from stainless steel, while the bezel and the case back are made in titanium. The case is protected on both sides with sapphire crystals and it is constructed to provide decent water resistance up to 30 meters (approximately 100 feet).
The beating heart of the new Classic Sonata is the in-house manufactured caliber UN-67 self-winding movement that offers the usual functions of hours, minutes and seconds (central axis), as well as the second time-zone, large date and alarm function with a cathedral gong. The impeccable mechanism operates at the frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz) and it can store enough energy to keep the watch working for about 42 hours.

The new Classic Sonata boasts more subtle and more elegant design when compared with previous Sonata models that were masculine, bold and highly sportive. The watch is an exclusive boutique edition that is issued in the limited quantity of only 99 individual exemplars.
