Great passion for sport, highest precision, a sophisticated style and amazing technological achievements joined together Tag Heuer and Mercedes-Benz. Consequently, Swiss watchmaker produced number of stunning sport watches for men. SLR Calibre S Laptimer chronograph is one of the most striking timepieces among them.
Back in 2004, Tag Heuer presented the commemorative watch series, which celebrated the launch of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren super sports car. The SLR Calibre 36 timepieces were exclusively produced for owners of these ultra-luxury cars, inspired by the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SLR of the 1950s.
This exceptional limited edition, as well as SLR-branded series that followed, was direct products of TAG Heuer’s historic connection with McLaren Mercedes that started in 1981, when Swiss watchmaker signed the partnership with the Formula 1 team.
Ever since, Tag has worked together with McLaren Mercedes team and its drivers (Tag’s ambassadors) Kimi Räikkönen and David Coulthard and erlier, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Mika Häkkinen, in order to create hi-end sport watches for both, professionals and passionate amateur drivers.
Fourth SLR Series Comes with the Calibre S
The Tag Heuer men’s SLR Calibre S Laptimer for Mercedes-Benz came in 2008, as the fourth SLR series. Unlike previous three, which had been released in Limited editions, this one became the permanent part of the brand’s catalogue.
After the first SLR, that was truly avant-garde watch, Tag Heuer has continued with more conservative designs, which lost the effect of exclusivity, but achieved bigger popularity. With the forth series, it introduced innovative in-house Calibre S, special electro-mechanical chronograph movement that offered very interesting designers solutions.
This hybrid movement with quartz precision and a mechanical chronograph module features Time and Chronograph modes that allows using central hour, minute, and second hands for both, timekeeping and chrono counting. By simple press on the push button, you can switch the mode and then easily come back. That is the way to use central hands as a chronograph, but also to change the Flyback counter, with 1/100th of a second accuracy into the Perpetual “retrograde” calendar, adjusted until 2099. The Caliber S also provides the Laptimer function that indicates Best lap time up to 20 laps.
Robustness and Sport Elegance
Silver or black dial with vertical strips features three hand-applied semi-circular counters – the lap counter is at 12 o’clock position, the 1/10th of a second retrograde counter is located at 4:30, while the 1/100th of a second retrograde counter takes a position at 7:30.
For the first time, the Mercedes-Benz inscription was removed from the dial and that because the production of the Mercedes McLaren SLR had started to slow down. Hand-applied hour indexes incorporate luminescent markers, as well as hour and minute hands. Dial is covered and protected with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with double antireflective treatment.
Over-sized masculine case, with diameter of 47 mm (the largest among Tag Heuer watches) is made of fine brushed steel and comes with polished edges. The bezel matches color of the dial and it is crafted either in titanium carbide (for the black dial) or polished steel (for the silver dial). Both versions have a tachymetre scale. There are two polished fluted crowns – one on each side of the case and two fine-brushed texturized push buttons, leaning at 45° on top of the case.
The Tag Heuer men’s SLR Calibre S Laptimer for Mercedes-Benz watches are available with the 5-row fine-brushed steel bracelet, which comes with the solid steel folding clasp, SLR lettering and safety push buttons or with the black natural rubber strap, with textures inspired by the lateral air intake of the SLR 722 car.
