With Grand Carrera Calibre 8 RS watches, beautiful design simplicity and appealing sport elegance are taken to the new premium level. Featuring all elements that make the Grand Carrera Collection distinctive at the first glance, these elegant Tag Heuer’s timepieces are specific by grand date and GMT functions.
When I saw Tag Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 8 RS watch for the first time, I could not take my eyes off its dial. It was a version with a silver dial and a black leather strap, and although I later discovered a black dial variation, the silver one is still my favorite, mostly because of its clearness, great luminosity and the way how raised hour markers look on the textured surface. They are hand applied, as well as Tag Heuer’s logo, and just like hour and minute hands, they are nicely polished and coated with a luminescent material.
The dial is visually divided into two parts – the central part with a clear surface that features the logo, a stylish Grand Carrera Calibre 8 inscription and a Grand Date window below the 12 o’clock position, framed with a circular texture that beautifully stresses hour markers. However, the central part of the dial is the RS disc display with Extensive Côtes de Genève finishing, at the 6 o’clock position that tracks time in the second time zone.
This interesting GMT function seams to be better solution for showing time in the second zone than the fourth central hand. It is provided by a Caliber 8 self-winding movement which is a COSC certified chronometer based on ETA 2892-A2, but with Grande Date and GMT functions added by Soprod. It oscillates at the frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and provides 42 hours of power-reserve.
Tag Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 8 RS Grand Date GMT Automatic watches have mid-size cases with 42.5 mm in diameter, made of stainless steel with both brushed and polished surfaces. Among 8 variations, I have already presented my favorite one (with a silver dial and a black leather strap – ref wav5112.FC6225). Three other variations have silver dials, combined with either a stainless steel bracelet or a brown leather strap. The one with a brown leather strap is the most luxury version, featuring a bezel, hour markers and the frame of the disc, made in fine-brushed and polished 18 Kt rose gold. This timepiece will certainly attract even those who have never considered buying Tag Heuer’s watch.
Two variations of the Grand Carrera Calibre 8 come with black dials, combined with either a black leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet, while two models with brown dials feature a steel bracelet or a brown crocodile strap.
These watches are covered with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal on the front and with a double sapphire crystal on the back. Each of them features a screw-in crown and water-resistance up to 100 meters (330 feet).
