The renowned watchmaker started introducing its 2014 collection which will be officially presented at the upcoming Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie. The first novelty is a classic Luminor 1950 model, distinctive by an unusual position of the winding crown which is placed on the left side of a case. Design simplicity, high-end legibility, a stunning tough construction and an advanced technology exhibited through a transparent case-back are main characteristics of this new Luminor 1950 Destro (Left-handed) 3 Days (PAM557) timepiece.
Almost all details about Panerai’s watches have their roots in the brand’s history. Hence, the position of the crown is not an exception. It is inspired by historic models, produces for the first time in the early 1940s, to fulfill the special requirements of Italian Navy commandos. It is not because these special unites had an unusually high number of left-handers in their squad. As a matter of fact, all commandos wore watches on right hand, since left hand was reserved for a depth gauge or compass. Thus, the crown placed at the left side of the case was much easier to be handled with.
Another interesting detail from the past that Panerai restarted using this year on several occasions is a distinctive 12-sided ring which surrounds revealed inner-parts on the back-side of the case. It dates back to 1930s, when Panerai created just a few examples with 12-sided bezel with the inscription “Officine Panerai – Breverrato”. The same inscription appears at the case-back of the new Luminor 1950 Destro 3 Days (PAM557) watch. In Italian, the word “Brevettato” means “patented”, and it refers to the brand’s patented luminescent material.
The robust case has the diameter of 47 mm and it presents the brand’s signature sandwich structure which looks particularly impressive when the watch is observed from the side. It is made of stainless steel that is beautifully polished on the bezel. Along with the crown, there is another brand’s trademark feature at the left side – a robust crown protector. Inside the case, there is an in-house Caliber P.3000. This hand-winding movement features two barrels, which provides a great power-reserve of up to three day.
New Luminor 1950 Destro 3 Days (PAM557) watch comes with a brown leather strap, as well as with an additional rubber strap which is more suitable for diving operations.
