For the first time, Schaffhausen-based manufacturer used bronze for the watch case of new Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “Expedition Charles Darwin”. This special edition timepiece is a tribute to the Darwin’s journey to the Galapagos Islands where he collected the evidence that formed the basis of his theory on the origin of species. Interestingly, bronze has been one of the most commonly used materials in shipbuilding at that time.
Besides the case, this metal alloy has also been used for the newly designed external/internal rotating bezel. The innovative bezel comes with SafeDive system which enables the wearer/diver to easy measure for how long he has already been underwater. He can do this simply by reading the time off the scale on the internal bezel. The SafeDive concept provides that the rotating bezel on the interior of the wristwatch only moves anticlockwise. Thus the elapsed dive time can only be extended and not shortened if the diver moves the bezel by chance and there is enough oxygen to ascend in any case.
The watch that pays homage to the famous British naturalist has standard case for Aquatimer Chronograph, measuring 44mm in diameter and 17mm in thickness. It is powered by the in-house manufactured caliber 89365 mechanical movement that provides power reserve of 68 hours. The self-winding mechanism oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz) and it is built on 35 jewels.
The watch is protected with convex sapphire glass with antireflective coating and it is constructed to resist water pressure of up to 300 meters (about 1,000 feet). The crown and push-buttons are shielded with a matte black rubber coating. The bronze tone of the case also appears in the luminescent material on the hands, indexes and 15-minute scale on the internal rotating bezel.
Finally, Charles Darwin Aquatimer Chronograph is accessorized with a black rubber strap with the new, IWC-patented bracelet quick-change system. In the year of Aquatimer family, IWC has launched several amazing timepieces. This newcomer is definitely one of the most attractive one.
