Cartier simply does not stop surprising us. After the release of the brand’s first diving model and the stunning Rotonde de Cartier Earth Moon watch, we are more than happy to see this highly complicated model which, thanks to very serious mechanical advancements, displays a perpetual calendar in a truly magnificent way. In the heart of one complication, new Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire watch reveals another one. It is a flying tourbillon with its signature C-shaped cage that stands in the middle of the multi-tier circular display of the perpetual calendar. Cartier has produced just 100 pieces of this stunning model that will be officially presented at the upcoming Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie.
In order to create such an original perpetual calendar, Cartier developed a mechanism which is almost completely free from classical levers and springs. Instead, all the main performances are controlled by gears (or more precisely, by a special set of nested gears that Cartier named “the Brain”), which allows adjustments in both direction and also highly increases durability of the movement. The new in-house Calibre 9459 MC comprises 382 components, including 51 jewels. This high-end hand-winding mechanism is completely revealed through a transparent sapphire crystal case-back.
Let us now analyze the dial of the new Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire watch whose striking design is a true piece of art. It features two intersected rings, one serving as the time display and another one framing the perpetual calendar and the tourbillon cage. At the outer part of the dial, you can see two symmetrical patterns and the minute scale. The off-centered time display features stylish Roman numerals, characteristic for the brand’s watches. The perpetual calendar is composed of three tiered rings: the one that is the closest to the tourbillon C-shaped cage shows days of the week, the one in the middle indicates months, and finally the outer ring indicates days of the week. Finally, the leap year is located at the back-side of the case.
Beside its stunning design and technical advancements, this great timepiece is also a luxurious model, featuring a robust, 45 mm case, made of platinum. Blue cabochon at the top of the crown comes as the brand’s signature. The new Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire watch is available with a stylish black alligator strap, featuring an 18 karat white gold buckle.
