At SIHH 2014, Baume & Mercier extended its Clifton line with some amazing timepieces. One of them is the elegant Clifton Retrograde Date model for men which comes equipped with the impeccable automatic movement featuring retrograde date and power reserve. This exceptional newcomer is inspired by gold gentlemen’s wristwatches of the 1950s.
The new Clifton Retrograde Watch is housed in a round case which measures 43mm in diameter and 12mm in thickness. Its case is crafted from stainless steel and it combines satin and polished finishes. It is shielded on both sides with anti-reflective sapphire crystals and provides decent water resistance of up to 50 meters (approximately 165 feet).
Gilded details of the new Clifton Retrograde instantaneously draw attention
Clifton Retrograde features a sun satin-finished silver-colored dial with gilt dauphine-styled hands, indices and Arabic numerals for even hours. A retrograde date window is shown through a 31-day scale in a semi-circular format and it takes up quite a bit of dial surface, being located between 2 and 4 o’clock position.
A power reserve indicator with a long blued-steel hand is situated at the 6 o’clock position, while a day in a week display (also with blued hand) is placed at the 9 o’clock position. At the outer rim, there is a seconds track that features blue Arabic numerals at each 5-second interval, nicely matching the blued-steel hands of the subsidiary dials. The asymmetrical lay-out of the dial gives the watch a quite interesting look.
The beating heart of this beautiful timekeeper is the Swiss-made mechanical caliber that is visible through a transparent sapphire crystal case back. The self-winding movement is capable to store enough power to keep the watch ticking for at least 42 hours when fully wound. The mechanism has a beating rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).
Baume & Mercier Clifton Retrograde 10149 is worn with a brown alligator leather strap, fitted with an adjustable triple folding buckle with security push-pieces. The retail price of this novelty is $5,700 which places it at the top of the Clifton collection. The watch will be available from April 2014.
