Have you seen a ballerina who dances as lightly as a butterfly? Well, those who saw the newest Van Cleef & Arpels masterpiece at the SIHH 2013 show in Geneva can definitely imagine how magnificent it would look like. Once again, the renowned watchmaker combined precious materials and a complex mechanism to display a true feminine beauty on the unique poetic way. The Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée watch presents to us a lady from fairies (half-dancer, half-butterfly), who shows the flow of time with graceful waves of her wings.
Six years ago, Van Cleef & Arpels launched the Poetic Complication Féérie watch. The same design concept is now revived with the new Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée timepiece. This time, the artistic watchmaker took the inspiration from 1940s and the series of clips that Louis Arpels dedicated to iconic ballerinas, such as La Camargo, the 18th century dancer, or the Russian prima ballerina, Anna Pavlova. Adorned by precious stones, these playful clips immediately became highly sought-after items. Add to this a quote by Anna Pavlova: ‘‘I’ve been dreaming that I was a ballerina, and that I was spending my whole life dancing as lightly as a butterfly…’’, and we have all motifs that made the new Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée watch so remarkable.
In the center of the stage – a wave guilloché dial, with a striking violet shade, there is a miniature golden figurine of a ballerina, with her tiny waist and face, highlighted by sparkling diamonds. The true magic and poetry come with layered veils of her tutu. The inner one, created of champlevé enamel, clothes the ballerina, while outer veils which represent a pair of wings dance over the dial, showing hours on the left side and minutes on the right side. But at first, they stay still in the initial position, waiting for the user to revive them.
The magic starts with the press on the button at the 8 o’clock position, when the upper part of dancer’s tutu comes to life and transforms into skeletonized wings. After indicating accurate time, they return simultaneously to their initial positions, leaving the user to enjoy their fluid and gracious movements.
This artistic performance is possible thanks to a double retrograde movement, inspired by the mechanism from the brand’s heritage which powered a Magicien Chinois pocket watch from 1927. Today, the poetic way of displaying time on a retrograde display is the signature of the Van Cleef & Arpels’ Poetic Complications collection.
The Ballerine Enchantée has a white gold case with the diameter of 40.5mm and a diamond-set bezel. All pieces will be numbered and the design will become a part of the Maison’s permanent collection. Most certainly, this beautiful ladies’ model will be among the top jewelry and artistic watches in 2013.
