The watchmaker from Les Breuleux, Richard Mille, has long been inspired by the world of automobiles and motorsports in the designs for his watch brand. At the SIHH 2013, the auto racing enthusiast will present the new timepiece that will celebrate Jean Todt’s long career in the world of auto racing.
This cooperation does not surprise me because Richard Mille is quite familiar with the auto racing world. Its famous sports partners are Felipe Massa and Jules Bianchi, and the watch brand is also the official timekeeper for a range of internationally renowned events, such as the Le Mans Classic and the Grand Prix de Pau Historique.
The new RM 036 Tourbillon G-Sensor Jean Todt Limited Edition Watch features a high-tech construction and materials, as well as an unusual complication.
Two teams – Richard Mille’s and Jeand Todt’s have worked closely to develop the movement that will be capable to interpret the physical constraints felt by the body during rapid decelerations to make drivers aware of the dangers linked to the road. That led to the creation of the Tourbillon G-Sensor RM 036 Jean Todt.
This exceptional timepiece is powered by the Richard Mille’s own Caliber RM036. This tourbillon movement is made completely from grade-5 titanium and ARCAP on a carbon nano fiber baseplate inside an ergonomically crafted titanium case.
The manually wound mechanism preserves no less than 70 hours of power reserve and like all RM movements, it has a free-sprung balance with variable inertia, a fast-rotating barrel and a “function selector” reminiscent of a car’s gearbox to select the hand-setting mode by the push of a button in the crown.
What sets this RM wristwatch apart is the mechanical G-meter system that visually displays the wearer’s body rate of deceleration. G-force is a term for accelerations or decelerations felt as weight. It is not a force, per se, but a force per unit mass. This RM mechanism is designed to visually display the “Gs” accumulated by the wearer of the watch during rapid deceleration, thus making a driver aware when he is approaching dangerous road speeds.
The scale situated at the 12 o’clock position indicates whether the deceleration is safe (green zone) or critical (red zone) for the driver. You can quickly and easily reset it to zero by using a push-piece located on the left side of the case, at the 9 o’clock position.
The Tourbillon G-Sensor RM 036 Jean Todt watch will be released in a limited edition of only 15 timepieces. Each of them is housed in a tonneau shaped case crafted from lightweight titanium. The case measures 50mm x 42.70mm and it is 16.15mm thick. As a part of Richard Mille’s special collection for SIHH 2013, these models will be available in January 2013.
