This year, Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrates its 180th anniversary and for this occasion, the luxury Swiss manufacturer has presented the Jubilee Collection of watches which pays tribute to the Grand Maison’s founder, Antoine LeCoultre (1803–1881). The greatest Jaeger-LeCoultre achievement that is unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneve is its Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3 Jubilee Watch (the referent number is 5036420).
The new Grand Complication watch is aesthetically directly inspired by the pocket-watches of the 19th century. It is the third Jaeger-LeCoultre Grand Complication model to be equipped with a Gyrotourbillon, but it is the first to boast a Flying Gyrotourbillon.
Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3 Jubilee is an authentic 21st century watchmaking sensation that besides Flying Gyrotourbillon also has a blued gold balance and one quite intriguing innovation – a spherical-shaped balance-spring.
A Flying Gyrotourbillon is composed of two carriages which rotate in one minute and 24 seconds – meaning 2.5 times per minute – and does not owe its existence exclusively to the inventiveness of the Jaeger-LeCoultre engineers and watchmakers, but also to the use of cutting-edge equipment, such as the five-axis machining center.
The engineers and the watchmakers of the Manufacturer used aluminum to achieve an authentic micromechanical feat by creating an ensemble composed of around one hundred parts, yet weighing no more than one gram.
The ultra-light aluminum carriage of the gyrotourbillon has undergone a surface treatment that increases its capability to reflect the light. The lightness and sturdiness of aluminum generally result in reduced radiance that significantly decreases the reflection of light rays. In this particular case, the material features reflective attributes that enable light to stream into the heart of the spherical tourbillon.
Within this construction, a distinctive new element immediately catches the eye at first glimpse. In association with a blued gold balance, the mechanisms of the balance-spring create a stunning three-dimensional effect.
The beating heart of the watch is Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 176 which combines the gyrotoubillon with a chronograph function. The impeccable mechanism is developed, crafted and assembled in the Grande Complication workshops of the Jaeger-LeCoultre.
This newcomer is housed in a beautiful platinum case measuring 43.5mm in diameter and 15.5mm in thickness. Its stunning case incorporates an elegant bezel and lugs encrusted with a polished finish which creates a nice contrast with the satin-brushed case sides. The case is water-resistant up to 50 meters (approximately 165 feet).
The Perfection of Functionality Expressed on ItsBeautiful Dial
The new Jaeger-LeCoultre has three independent dials and each of them bears a traditional Fine Watchmaking finish intended to reveal its singular nature. The hours and minutes dial is distinguished by its traditional opaline-silvered decoration and it has dauphine-styled hands which are completely in harmony with the other features of the watch, while the chronograph counter set at the 9 o’clock position features a sunray rhodium-plated finish and exudes with a classic aesthetic.
The third dial situated at the 3 o’clock position shows the day/night indication. It features a hand-punched background and the night section has been coated with a translucent blue lacquer. The main-plate has been patiently manually manufactured with an ancient technique which was rediscovered in the Jaeger-LeCoultre workshops.
The crowning member of the Jaeger-LeCoultre 180th Anniversary Jubilee Collection is issued in the limited series of only 75 pieces. It is available either individually or as a set of 3 platinum timepieces with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Cylindrique Jubilee and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Jubilee. If you choose to purchase the Jubilee 3-watch set – all three pieces will be with the same serial number.
Since 1833, when Antoine LeCoultre founded a small workshop, the brand has given rise to 1,242 calibers and over 400 patents.
