By making a dial be semi-transparent, A. Lange & Sohne gives the completely new look to the last year’s reinterpretation of its iconic Lange 1 watch. A way more interesting and modern than the previous version, however still keeping an exceptional stylishness of the line, a new Grand Lange 1 Lumen Timepiece for the first time reveals the brand’s signature outsized date disk, through a sapphire crystal dial. This piece of art is produced in the Limited Edition of 200 pieces and will be officially presented at the upcoming gathering of the top end watchmakers, next month in Geneva.
At the last year’s Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie, A. Lange & Sohne revealed several groundbreaking models, among them a beautiful Grand Lange 1 watch, as the successful modern reinterpretation of the legendary Lange 1. For the SIHH 2013, the renowned German manufacturer prepared something even more impressive, preserving the same, elegant and slim 40.9mm case (just 8.8mm thick) with a tiny, perfectly polished bezel, as well as the same, ultra-slim mechanism. Why should they change the perfection? However, changes are so significant and cool, which gives the watch a completely new identity.
Firstly, there is a semi-transparent, smoked sapphire crystal dial that A. Lange & Sohne has already introduced with a Lange Zeitwek Lumnous Limited Series from 2010. Being treated with a special coating, sapphire crystal blocks most of the visible spectrum of light, but not the invisible UV light spectrum that passes through to a luminous surface of the outsize date, charging it with luminosity. Thus, it becomes visible even in dark. A large hour and minute sub-dial, a small seconds sub-dial, as well as the outer ring with power-reserve indications are non-transparent parts, made of blackened silver. All markers, as well as rhodiumed gold hands are covered with luminous material, which makes the watch highly legible, unlike the previous version.
Inside the round platinum case, there is a Calibre L095.2 hand-winding movement which is decorated and assembled by hand and revealed through a sapphire crystal case-back. Only 4.7mm thick, this high-end mechanism features plates and bridges made of untreated German silver and a hand-engraved balance cock. An in-house balance spring ensures great accuracy, while high stability comes from the three-quarter plate.
Despite having only one mainspring barrel, it guarantees the superb power-reserve of 72 hours. The Calibre L095.2 comprises 400 components and 42 jewels and it oscillates at the frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour.
