High end watchmaking brand Richard Mille might be founded just ten years ago, but thanks to its tendency to apply new solutions and technological advances in its products, the company set in Les Breuleux, Switzerland, has managed to build quite a reputation in the industry. This brand constructs less than 3,000 timepieces per year. However, these are all quite sophisticated products, and the company is more focused on the quality, instead of the quantity. At the first major watchmaking event of the year, the Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie, the Swiss firm is presenting five new additions to its exclusive collection of timepieces.
The first of the newcomers is Richard Mille RM 037 wristwatch which we have already presented. After a few years of hard work that were required to develop the proprietary CRMA1 mechanism constructed from grade 5 titanium, the Swiss manufacturer is included in the new watch. This self-winding mechanical movement is remarkable because of its unusual crown that is not directly attached to the mechanism, as it is customary. This feature is vastly important in the event of repairing the watch and it diminishes the particular types of potential damages. The “detached” crown practically means that the adjusting of the functions is performed by pressing the pusher that allows cycling through the functions of the timepiece. The type of adjustment is indicated on the right side of the dial. The new in-house automatic movement, which is visible through the skeletonized dial and case back, is set in a quite chunky housing. The case is 52.2 mm high, 34.4 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick. The luxury product enables the power reserve of 50 hours and has water resistance of 50 meters.
Three New Intriguing Sport Watches
The next in line are two models dedicated to the brand’s ambassador, a famous Formula One driver, Felipe Massa. The first model is RM050 timepiece that features a tourbillon and a split seconds chronograph. It is equipped with another brand new in-house mechanism, the hand-wound RMCC1 movement. This watch has a modern and unusual case that is constructed of polymer, and impregnated with carbon nanotubes. The inclusion of the 21st century technology in the creation of this timepiece allows it to be extraordinary light. At the same time, it means that Richard Mille RM050 timepiece can endure the tremendous amounts of stress.
The second version of the watch that is made for the Brazilian driver is even more exciting. Richard Mille RM 56 timepiece is housed in a case that is entirely constructed of sapphire crystal. The exceptionally tough material makes the production of the watch extremely tricky and it does not allow any room for mistakes. As the representatives of the Swiss watchmaker explained, it takes incredible 1,000 hours just to create it. Furthermore, grinding requires additional 430 hours, while the finishing takes 350 hours more. If you add up the numbers, you can calculate that the whole process takes mind-blowing 1,780 hours. It comes as no surprise that the timepiece will come in a very limited edition of just five pieces, or that the expected price will be $1.7 million. RM Felipe Massa Sapphire timepiece will include a hand-wound tourbillon movement.
The watchmaker from Les Breuleux will be introducing one more product that comes as the result of the collaboration with a famous sportsman. The ambassador in question is an Argentinean polo legend, Pablo Mac Donough, and the new timepiece is called Richard Mille Tourbillon RM 053. The watch features an innovative design, and it is totally adjusted for polo, the sport which can potentially seriously damage the wearer’s watch. The product is set in a “battleship” type of case made from titanium carbide. The face features a dial that is split in two parts which are aligned at the angle of 30 degrees. The one on the right shows hours and minutes, whereas the left one displays the tourbillon and seconds. Besides, the origin of the product is noticeable in the construction of the extremely light and compact hand-wound mechanism. This sort of movement is much less affected by the centripetal and centrifugal forces that usually occur during the polo match.
The Timepiece with the Skull Movement
The list of striking new products by Richard Mille is concluded with the watch that has a truly original and somewhat gruesome design. It is Richard Mille Tourbillon RM 052 Skull timepiece. As it is clear from the name, this timepiece uses the skull motif which is entirely integrated in the movement and visible through skeletonized dial. The back of the skull is the mechanism’s center bridge and the movement is attached to the case with four bridges that look like crossed bones. The material used for the movement is grade 5 titanium. Inside the jaws of the skull, you can clearly see the ruby of tourbillon cage. The scary styled watch will be made in the limited edition of 21 pieces. Fifteen of these will be made of titanium, whereas six more will be made in either white or red gold.
