Panerai has prepared a new timepiece from its Firenze line dedicated to the brand’s birth place, the Italian city of Florence. The steel watch sports lovely ornaments across its case and exposed movement. These decorations are dominated with the motif of Fleur-de-lis, or the lily flower, which stands on the Florentine coat of arms for more than millennia. The 99- piece limited edition with the designation PAM00672, the second in the Firenze series, is sold exclusively in the brand’s historic Florentine boutique at the Piazza San Giovanni and it costs around $28,420.
Even though its facilities and workshops are situated in the Swiss town of Neuchatel, Panerai takes pride in its Italian heritage. That is why the brand opted to make another tribute to Florence. The inspiration for the homage was the famous Florentine coat of arms with the flower of lily symbol. Ever since the 11th century, this symbol has been on the city’s coat of arms and therefore represents a clear association for the Tuscan city.
This is why the lily-shaped ornaments in the combination with other geometric decorations are visible all over the case and spread even to the crown of the piece. The elegant beautifications are hand-engraved on the front and the side of the housing by the brand’s master engravers. It is a very laborious process and even the most skillful of the artisans still require an entire week of work, before the entire captivating ensemble is completed. Since the whole procedure is done by hand, all of the cases from the 99-piece series have their own unique character.
The basis for the work of the artisans is a typical Panerai housing. The case is cushion-shaped, 47 mm wide and made from the brushed steel. It is another nod to the brand’s history, since it replicates the looks of the very first watch that Officine Panerai made back in the mid-1930s. The material of choice is austenitic steel alloy AISI 316L which is hypoallergenic and very resilient to the extreme surroundings. Panerai Radiomir Firenze 3 Days Acciao PAM00672 also includes sapphire crystals on the front and the rear side of the case. Supported water resistance is at respectable 100 meters.
What separates the new watch from its predecessor from the Firenze line is the presence of further engravings which can be seen on its manually-wound mechanical movement. Prior to the release of PAM00672, the brand has already introduced PAM000604 watch. This model had the same decorations on its case and a fairly similar dial as the newcomer. However, the presence of the heavily engraved movement which in the new form got the designation P.3000/F (instead of P.3000) is the trait that makes the novel piece much more appealing. However, it also stands behind the substantially higher price. The new model with the engravings on the movement costs $9,000 more than its predecessor which is also still available.
Thanks to the sapphire panel on the rear of the case, the wearer of the piece can admire fine decorations on the four brushed bridges of the movement which guard its wheelwork. Once again, we can see the same ornaments on the periphery of the exposed movement, accompanied with a larger flower of lily symbol that dominates the largest of these bridges. Unlike the engraving on the housing, these are laser-performed.
Apart from the mentioned beautifications, it is the same old reliable in-house P.3000 caliber. It is a hand-wound mechanical movement with 21 jewels. It is quite large with the width of16 ½ lignes, while its thickness is 5.3 mm. The movement features a Glucydur balance and an oversized balance wheel (13.2 mm wide) which beats at the frequency of 21,600 vph. Its resilience is guaranteed with Incabloc anti-shock device, whereas the 3-day power reserve is based on the presence of two spring barrels. The only supported indications of the 161-piece movement are hours and minutes. Additionally, it has a convenient mechanism that allows adjustment of the hour hand in both directions without the stopping of the movement.
The watch features a typical Panerai dark face with a sandwich dial (where the upper plane is cut in form of Arabic numerals and hour markers to reveal the luminous plane underneath). The black dial features a Sun-brushed finish and includes the lily symbol and the “Firenze” inscription right beneath the center.
Panerai Radiomir Firenze 3 Days Acciao PAM00672 is coupled with a brown leather strap with contrasting stitching and some more Fleur-de-lis symbols. The restricted series piece can be bough solely at the brand’s boutique in Florence which is situated on the Piazza San Marco, right along some of the best known sights in the city, including the Florence Cathedral.
