IWC Schaffhausen is among 42 world’s most renowned watch manufactures which will be participating in the 6th edition of the Only Watch Charity Auction this November. The famous Swiss watchmaking company has created a unique Ingenieur Automatic Edition “Tribute to Nico Rosberg” model which is crafted from solid boron carbide.
This one-of-a-kind watch sets another milestone in the watchmaking history that it made earlier this year with the Ingenieur Automatic Edition “AMG GT” which was the very first timepiece to boast a case made of boron carbide. It is an extremely hard material, usually used for bulletproof vests, tank armor, precision toll parts, as well as for other industrial applications.
Boron carbide is one of the hardest materials in the world, and therefore very hard to treat. Its mineral hardness is approximately 9.497, which ranks it the third just behind diamond and cubic boron nitride. Considering that fact, the new IWC Ingenieur Automatic Tribute to Nico Rosberg is one of the most scratch-resistant timepieces available worldwide. Furthermore, this material has low density, which makes it as light as if it was crafted from aluminum.

Its case measures 46mm in diameter and houses the new in-house manufactured caliber 80110 self-winding movement. The impeccable mechanism with automatic winding is fitted with a Pellaton automatic winding system, and it comprises a special black-coated rotor. The watch is capable to power energy which will provide the watch autonomy of 44 hours. The watch is also equipped with a shock-absorption system and it provides the maximum protection against abrasion.
Underneath the front sapphire crystal glass lies a carbon fiber dial with Arabic numerals 6 and 12 and indexes filled with luminous material. The same substance has been applied at the hour and minute hands for the better visibility under low light conditions.
This unique timepiece comes with a black rubber strap with Dinamica inlay green stitching. Interestingly, the same innovative microfiber is used in the Mercedes Benz AMG GT interior.
The IWC Ingenieur Automatic Tribute to Nico Rosberg for Only Watch 2015 with the referent number IW324603 will be auctioned on the 7 November 2015 in Geneva. The Only Watch initiative raises money by auctioning watches donated by watchmaking brands. All proceeds will benefit scientific and medical research on neuromuscular diseases in general and Duchenne muscular dystrophy in particular.
