Omega is launching a new limited edition that commemorates one of the brand’s major achievements that is also tied to one of the top accomplishments of the entire human kind. The new watch marks 45 year anniversary of the Apollo 11’s landing on the Moon when the second man to land on our satellite, Buzz Aldrin, wore Omega Speedmaster on his wrist. The new limited collection issued in 1,969 pieces in order to commemorate the year when the historic mission was performed comes in a titanium case with red gold elements. These were also used on its peculiar gray dial with laser treatment which is responsible for its three-dimensional appearance. The watch runs on Omega 1861 chronograph movement, the famed caliber that was used in an original watch that was worn on the Moon’s surface. As it has been announced, the new limited edition timepiece will hit the stores in June and will be sold at the price of $7,700.
The Resemblance to the Apollo 11 Capsule
The new timepiece from the Speedmaster collection is made in the color scheme that replicates the looks of the Apollo 11 capsule. It is fitted into a round case made of grade 2 titanium which was completely brushed. It features water resistance of 50 meters and it is conjoined with a bezel made of the brand’s trademark 18 K Sedna red gold. The bezel is made with a matte black ceramic ring with a tachymetric scale. The same colors and materials that were used on the bezel were once again implemented on its charming gray dial which includes a notable three-dimensionality, especially on its chrono counters, thanks to the laser treatment. As it has been mentioned, the face, just like its bezel, involves red gold elements. The noble material was used for the hands (central chrono hand is just plated in gold), chrono counters, as well as hour markers. It also includes luminous coatings for better legibility. Another contributor to this quality is the presence of a box-shaped sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment.
Inside the titanium case beats a historic rhodium-plated Omega Caliber 1861 which was used in the original Moonwatch worn by Aldrin. It is a manually wound mechanical movement that has a power reserve of two days. Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Limited Edition watch also has a nice looking NATO style fabric strap with nylon coating for better protection. This type of bracelet, used ever since the mid 20th century for military watches actually goes all the way under the solid metal case-back of the watch.
