Jaquet Droz reinterpreted the design of its Petite Heure Minute the Loving Butterfly watch, presented earlier this year at the Baselworld 2013 watch fair. A new image on the ivory Grand Feu enameled dial is unique, painted exclusively for the upcoming Only Watch charity auction. Along with the image of the Loving Butterfly which is inspired by an historic automaton from the 18th century, this artistic timepiece showcases the Royal Palace of Monaco in the background. The reason for that is obvious – Monaco will host the fifth edition of the charity event with the goal to help the Duchenne muscular dystrophy research.
The highlight of this unusual, yellow gold watch is the Grand Feu enameled dial, showing an imaginative image of a child being pulled by a butterfly, while the painting in the background makes a nice 3-D effect. Entirely executed by hand, this masterpiece was inspired by the old sketch from the 18th century, drawn by Pierre Jaquet-Droz. Following this sketch, he constructed the legendary Loving Butterfly automaton which symbolizes the unique spirit of the Renaissance. Inspired by sculptures from some of the most beautiful buildings of Italian classical architecture, the figure of child was used as a powerful symbol of pure love, while the big blue butterfly represented growing interest for the nature.
By using the art of miniature painting on enamel, Jaquet Droz’s artists revived this image at the dial of its new Petite Heure Minute the Loving Butterfly watch. After the Limited Series of 28 pieces, the creative watchmaker decided to create a piece unique model to be auctioned at the Only Watch.
The time is displayed by an elegant sub-dial on the upper side of the dial. It features a railway style minute track and Roman numerals that indicate hours. The pretty robust, 43 mm case features a tiny polished bezel that nicely opens the dial. Matching the color of the butterfly, there is a stylish blue alligator strap. The sapphire crystal case-back reveals the beauty of inner parts of a self-winding mechanism, with the hand-engraved decoration and an oscillating mass in white gold.
