For the second time, a German watchmaker, Glashütte Original, has donated its masterpiece to the Only Watch, in order to help the struggle against Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This unique version of the brand’s iconic Senator Chronometer is going to be auctioned in a charity auction, in Monaco, later this year.
Specially designed to look classic and elegant, Senator Chronometers recall memories of the exceptional tradition of highly accurate marine watches, crafted in Glashütte since the beginning of the 19th century. Also, Senator Chronometers are first watches from Glashütte Original that is officially certified as a chronometer. This means that it passed a series of demanding performance and accuracy tests. Its quality has been recognized by the readers of Armbanduhren (a leading German watch magazine) who selected it as the “Watch of the Year”.
The newest, one-of-a-kind Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer has been crafted to continue this great tradition of the highest quality and precision. It is unique by its red gold case and an elegant matt black dial, with a “1/1” inscription which indicates its authenticity.
The dial is perfectly simple and amazingly readable, thanks to the beautiful contrast between the black surface and the large, silver sub-dial (small second counter) and stylish Roman numerals, also in silver color. A sub-dial at the 12 o’clock position indicates the level of power-reserve. A small circle inside this sub-dial also has its purpose. From 6:00 am until 6:00 pm, it is white, indicating day, while from 6:00 pm until 6:00 am, it is black, indicating night.
Along the outer rim of the beautiful dial, there is a minutes track, designed in a railroad style. The characteristic Glashütte Original panorama date display which instantly changes precisely at midnight, takes the 3 o’clock position. A red gold, sweep minute hand and a pear-shaped hour hand are nicely hand-polished.
The Senator Chronometer Only Watch 2011 is powered by a highly accurate, Caliber 58-01 hand-winding movement that can work 45 hours, when it is fully wound. This advanced stop-seconds/reset mechanism provides an easy setting of the exact time, as well as the right relations between minutes and seconds.
This piece of art, with its three-quarter plate, screw-mounted gold chatons, a hand-engraved balance cock and the latest development – planetary gears that determine the up and down movement of the power-reserve display, is visible through the antireflective sapphire crystal caseback.
The Senator Chronometer Only Watch 2011 will be sold in a special wood case that is inspired by marine chronometer housings from the past.
