The Neuchatel-based watch manufacturer, Vulcain, pays tribute to its 1961 Nautical watch by creating a DLC limited edition. This iconic Vulcain’s timepiece was one of the first diving watches with an alarm movement that was authentically audible under water. The strike warns divers when it is time to return to the surface, thanks to its triple case-back which serves as a resonance chamber.
The new diving watch features the DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating. This highly durable coating is a charcoal gray layer with a low friction coefficient which consists of an atomic lattice composed of two forms of carbon: diamond and graphite. Diamondblack™DLC consists completely of molecules of carbon and hydrogen organized in a structure similar to that of diamond, thus producing a layer with perfect chemical stability and high corrosion resistance. This high-tech material is applied by using a coating process which looks like the original surface finishes. Diamondblack™DLC is extremely skin-friendly since it cannot cause skin allergies. Also, it has a high level of hardness, approximately 5,000 Vickers. For example, stainless steel has about 200 Vickers.
Vulcain Nautical DLC Watch is housed in a mid-sized case with the diameter of 42mm and the thickness of 17.3mm. Its DLC-coated satin-brushed case incorporates a polished, black knurled bezel. The water resistance of the watch is assured down to amazing 300 meters (about 990 feet).
The watch has a triple case-back which serves as a resonance chamber and enables underwater use of the alarm function. The alarm duration is approximately 20 seconds.
The beating heart of the new Vulcain watch is Vulcain Cricket Manufacture Caliber V-10 which provides the usual set of functions, such as hours, minutes, central seconds, as well as alarm function. The manually-wound mechanism consists of 157 components and is capable to store enough energy to keep the watch ticking for approximately 42 hours. The in-house made movement is built on 25 jewels and oscillates at the frequency of 18,000 beats per hour.
Underneath the front Plexiglas lies a fixed dial with a decompression-table indication and a 60-minute graduated rotating inner bezel ring which is activated by a screwlocked crown at the 4 o’clock position.
The new Nautical DLC timepiece is attached to a rubberized waterproofed black leather strap, fitted with a DLC-coated steel pin buckle. This diving watch is issued in the limited quantity of only 100 pieces.
