Here we have another masterpiece of the watchmaking art from Ulysse Nardin. “Stranger” emulates a classical music box and plays Frank Sinatra’s greatest hit “Strangers in the Night” either on the hour or on call. This innovative wristwatch conveys the signature of the brand’s partner and a famous musician, Dieter Meier.
The Swiss manufacturer has a long and wealthy tradition of making timepieces with a musical soul, such as its revolutionary “Genghis Khan“ and “Alexander the Great Westminster Tourbillon“ minute repeaters. With “Stranger”, Ulysse Nardin has gone one step further, incorporating silicium technology for the escapement and anchor of its in-house made UN-690 mechanical movement. The 64 jewels movement preserves no less than 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
To adjust the time, the crown function is activated by a pusher instead of pulling the crown out in the traditional way. This masterpiece of the watchmaking art enables the owner to set the time with an exceptional ease.
This “Stranger” is manufactured in a limited quantity of only 99 pieces in rose gold, and it was presented this week in Zurich, Switzerland to a circle of selected guests (press and friends).
The Watch with Musical Soul
The unforgettable song and Frank Sinatra’s greatest hit back in 1966 “Strangers in the night” is a perfect melody for the latest development of a self-winding musical watch. The newly developed “Stranger” represents a fusion of music and time, as well as aesthetics and functionality.
The melody “Strangers in the Night” can be heard hourly or on call by pressing a pusher. A few different functions can be set by means of the integral pusher crown and to do so, you just need to simply turn the crown forwards or backwards. The on/off pusher which enables the musical mechanism to be either activated or deactivated is situated at the 10 o’clock position. This provides the melody to be programmed to play hourly or not at all.
This Ulysse Nardin’s novelty combines high tech with an artistic-musical component. It took more than five years for engineers to develop this masterpiece of the watchmaking art.
“Stranger” is housed in an 18-karat rose gold case with the diameter of 45mm. The case is protected by sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating and provides water resistance of up to 30 meters (about 100 feet).
The dial is especially interesting and full of details. There are Roman numerals as hour markers, a music box mechanism on rotating disc with ten blades… A small seconds counter and a date display are situated at the 6 o’clock position.
The case back of the watch features a medallion, while a black leather strap with a folding buckle keeps the watch secure to the wrist and completes the feeling of elegance.
