The King of Scary Moons
Stepan Sarpaneva and his design of a grimacing face that he uses for moon phase indications are quite well known in the world of watchmaking. Not only that they are predominantly used in timepieces by Sarpaneva, but also in collaboration of the Finish watchmaker with other brands (for example in MB&F Moonmachine piece). Once again, we see the same type of design in the latest product with Sarpaneva’s name on it. New Korona Kosmos, as well as all other watches launched by the Finn’s company are designed as well as constructed by the brand’s founder himself.
It is not uncommon to see multi-layered dials nowadays, but it does not happen very often that the face is structured from 12 surfaces on different levels, as it is the case with the newest Stepan Sarpaneva product with an open-worked face. Among the dozen of layers there are a trademark hand-engraved moon face and a rotating disc comprised of two quarters of a circle. This disc in nice looking electric blue color is decorated with 125 laser cut stars. It completes a full revolution every 59 days, which corresponds to two complete moon cycles. As it turns, it covers the moon on the top in order to indicate the current stage.

Apart from the moon face and the disc, some of the other layers on the dial include a skeletonized chapter ring with rectangular and hollowed hour markers, as well as a quite visible cobweb shaped grill beneath the rotating disc. The watch likewise features elegant curved faceted hour and minute hands. There is also a central sweeping hand.
Automatic Movement with Soprod A10 Base
The timepiece is set in a round shaped housing of medium size. Its diameter is 42 mm, as it is universally seen in Stepan Sarpaneva watches, while its height measures to exactly 11.1 mm. Korona Kosmos moreover includes a slightly cambered sapphire dial which is encircled by a fixed bezel. Inside the case there is a self-winding caliber with Soprod A10 base which was immensely modified since it includes an additional moon phase complication as an additional decoration. This is not the case just in the latest Sarpaneva product, but also in all others. The 25-jeweled caliber in question is 11 ½ lignes wide, it has a 42 hour long power storage and beats at the rate of 28,800 vph. As for the embellishments, it once again has typical decorations which include perlage finish and different coatings, depending on the variation. The featured type of attachment – a leather strap in different colors – is one more of the traits seen on all watches by the Finnish designer. As Sarpaneva announced, each of the following versions of Korona Kosmos will be restricted to just ten pieces.
