Speake-Marin London Chronograph is a special edition model dedicated to the early years of the British watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin. This special edition timepiece honors his first steps as a watchmaker when he restored antique watches in the Piccadilly arcade in London. The watch will be available only in the Fine Watch Room at Harrods, in London this summer where it will be officially presented as part of the Made with Love and Precision campaign. Throughout July and August, the luxury department store will display an amazing exhibition of watches from twenty three watchmaking houses which will be launched exclusively at Harrods.
Speake-Marin London Chronograph Special Edition Watch is equipped with the original Valjoux 92 movement made during the 1950’s and the ’60′s. These movements were acquired by a collector of vintage calibers and stocked in a safe for years. This days, they are extremely rare. The reason why they are chosen by Peter for this project is the fact that it is the same type of movement that he restored during his time in London.
As the heir of the favored Valjoux 23 family, the caliber Valjoux 92 was sized similarly (29. mm), but it was tooled with a rather different technology. It was an oscillating pinion design, distinct at a glance for having 2 rather than 3 chronograph engagement wheels which are visible from the back.
Although both calibers are column wheel designs, the Valjoux 92 has seven pillars versus the nine of all other Valjoux movements. In this Speake-Marin’s special edition, the impeccable movement will show its inner beauty through the open-worked sapphire case back.
The mechanical hand wound movement is built on 17 jewels, oscillates at the frequency of 18.000 alternations per hour (2.5 Hz) and offers 40 hours of power reserve guaranteeing an optimal precision.
The London Chronograph Special Edition is housed in the iconic Piccadilly case in titanium with polished and untreated bezel and lugs and black-DLC coated and brushed segment for the central container. The case measures 42mm in diameter and it is shielded from both sides with anti-reflective sapphire crystals. The combination of the black central part, as well as the chronograph pushers brings a sportier overall look, which is further strengthened with the black rubber strap which will keep the watch secured on its future owner’s wrist. The case construction offers the water resistance up to 30 meters (about 100 feet).
Underneath the front sapphire glass lies a three dimensional white dial that alternates between two classic styles of index design, Roman and Arabic. The red Arabic numeral 12 follows traditional English designs by being the only index not to be inscribed in black. Interestingly, both chronograph sub-dials float above the rest of the dial surface.
Below them is found the Speake-Marin topping tool logo wheel fitted into the hour wheel turning with the hour hand. The “Foundation” style hands made of blued steel give the final touch to this exceptional timepiece.
The Speake-Marin’s special edition watch (ref. 11001) will be available for the retail price of £14,400 (approximately $20,800).
