The Genevese watchmaker Roger Dubuis has prepared a new model which will definitively put a smile on the faces of all watch aficionados who love the company’s model but cannot afford timekeepers with six figure prices. New Excalibur Automatic Skeleton piece which will be shown for the first time at the SIHH 2015 show is a kind of a more affordable version of the similar watch with a double flying tourbillion. The upcoming model does not include said complication and as far as supported functions go, it is a common two-hand model. However, it is made in the best possible way, since its automatic movement is skeletonized, superbly finished and certified with the seal of Geneva. The novel timepiece will be sold at the price of around $82,300.
Ruger Dubois is renowned for its bold and utterly complex creations which are supplied with the top of the crop features. These pieces are always characterized with exceptional looks and performance. However, the price of these models reflects their complexity and puts them out of reach of most watch enthusiasts. With the latest model which will be premiered in Geneva in late January, the brand has made somewhat of a compromise that will bring its products closer to those who have so far been unable to afford a Roger Dubuis piece. To be fair, the novelty is still far from being called cheap, but that is caused with its impressive quality.
The main strong-point of the watch is its exposed completely in-house produced movement. Caliber RD820SQ that at the same time serves as the dial of the piece has all of its parts skeletonized. Some of its prominent features are the presence of the Roger Dubuis favored bridges in star form and the placement of the skeletonized micro-rotor at the 11 o’clock position. Caliber RD820SQ is comprised of 167 parts in total and it integrates 35 jewels in its construction. It is 16 lignes wide, 6.38 mm thick and it oscillates at the frequency of 21,600 vph. The supported size of its power reserve can keep it ticking for 60 hours.
The self-winding movement is decorated with a gray rhodium-plating, as well as with a circular-grained plate. Even though it does not provide additional features except two central hands for hours and minute, the caliber is still very distinguished. It bears the extremely demanding Geneva seal which guarantees that its functioning, decoration and the used materials are in accordance with the highest of standards.
The watch’s skeltonized face also includes a charcoal-gray flange with white minute markers and pink gold appliqués. The same material is used for its hands. Just like its tourbillion predecessor, new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Automatic Skeleton is made with an 18 K pink gold circular case with recognizable design traits, such as its fixed bezel with notches, as well as triple lug construction. Its diameter is 42 mm which is 3 mm less than its more complex relative, which is why the novelty should be more ergonomic and comfortable to wear. The decision to use gold as the material for the housing might not be the best one when the value of the timepiece is concerned, since a steel package could have additionally lowered the price of the model which is still pretty pricey for most people.
The new watch from the Excalibur collection is waterproof to 30 meters. Roger Dubuis Excalibur Automatic Squelete is paired with a brown genuine alligator strap. The attachment with hand-stitching fastens with an adjustable folding clasp made of pink gold.
