The independent Swiss watchmaker, Parmigiani Fleurier, has decided to create a new skeltonized model of its Tonda 1950 piece which celebrates and focuses on the trait that brought the watch success in the first place – its ultra-thin automatic movement. As it happens, the Fleurier based company actually decided to make two versions of the piece. Both women’s and men’s models are made with a similar frame and they are fitted inside a case whose diameter measures to 39 mm. The ladies’ version is actually a bit thicker and a bit more expensive due to the inclusion of a diamond-encrusted bezel. Additionally, the women’s version of Tonda 1950 Squelette is made with a housing from different material and unlike its men’s counterpart has a semi-transparent crystal that makes its dial look frosted. While the price of the version intended for the fairer sex costs around $47,150, the gentleman’s version has the price tag of around $43,500.
The latest Pamrigiani Fleurier watch which will be premiered at the upcoming Salon de la Haute Horlogerie 2015 is focused on the brand’s famed PF 701 which is the second thinnest automatic movement in the world with the slim profile of 2.5 mm. The thinnest of the caliber is unsurprisingly surpassed only by Piaget whose P1208 is the champion with the profile that measures to 2.35 mm. The second thinnest self-winding caliber in the world is over here displayed from both sides and additionally finished, as well as presented with the designation PF 705.
The hand-made caliber of the watch displays decorations such as beveling and brushed finish and looks very nice in its stripped and exposed form. Among the exposed components of the caliber there is also an off-centered micro-rotor made of solid platinum which is the part that allows the movement and the watch with which it is fitted with to be so slim. The skeletonized caliber integrates 144 parts in its construction and ticks at the frequency of 21,600 vph. Its only functions are two central hands, which is quite understandable, considering its dimensions. Caliber PF 702 has a power supply that keeps it running for 42 hours.
As it has been mentioned, Parmigiani Fleurier has presented two versions of the piece. The men’s one features a housing made of white gold. The variation that enables better view on the functioning of the caliber has the overall thickness of 7.8 mm and it is held on a wrist with a black strap. The ladies model is coupled with the same type of Hermes alligator leather wristlet that locks with an ardillon buckle.
However, the color of the attachment in this instance is brown. Moreover, the second version is made with a pink gold casing which has a slightly chunkier profile that measures to 8.4 mm. Of course, there is also an immediately visible different type of bezel which is decorated with 84 diamonds. Even though it does not enable the complete insight to the functioning of the caliber on which it runs as the first model, the ladies’ version looks amazing thanks to its crystal with a frosty effect on it.
