In honor to the famous Japanese manga series Golgo 13, the renowned watchmaker has already launched its super cool Seiko Limited Edition Golgo 13 EPD digital watch. Other three limited editions of analog timepieces, dedicated to Duke Togo (aka Golgo 13), the main character of the iconic series, are expected to be released in September.
Four watch models dedicated to a cartoon character? This can sound very strange for someone who is not familiar with the fact that these characters take a highly important part of the Japanese culture. However, I am pretty sure that these interesting pieces, produced in the limited series, will be out of stock soon.
The first limited edition of the Seiko Golgo 13 timepieces is based on the brand’s LE EPD Digital watch, which was released last year. Produced in two variations (ref. SBPA009 and SBPA011), the new Seiko Limited Edition Golgo 13 EPD watch with its high-resolution e-ink display seems like the perfect collectors gadget for all passionate fans of the manga series that has been running since the late 1960s.
Practically, the only differences between the two versions are slightly different colors of their pushers and the fact that the SBPA009 comes with a stainless steel bracelet, while the SBPA011 is available with a black leather strap. The e-ink display has a look of the TV screen, which along with a specific type of the bracelet gives a retro appearance to the watch. The display has a variety of different screens which, along with cool images of Duke Togo from Golgo 13, showcases time, world time in 32 cities and calendar functions. The 44 mm case made of black IP steel houses a solar quartz movement, which I have always considered as a great way of powering a timepiece.
The Japanese watchmaker created the SBPA009 version in the limited edition of 500 pieces, while the SBPA011 is limited to 1000 pieces. Prices are 63,000 Yen (around $790) and 57,750 Yen (around $720) respectively. Just like other three models that I am going to review, Seiko Limited Edition Golgo 13 EPD watches will be officially available only in Japan, but aficionados around the world still have a chance to capture them online.
Seiko Golgo 13 Land, Sea, and Air Prospex Watches
According to the Japanese watchmaker, the limited editions of Seiko Golgo 13 Land, Sea, and Air Prospex timepieces will be released in September. These models are something completely different from the EPD watch. Each of them is a serious sport watch, based on the brand’s existing pieces. Thus, they come with subtle changes that recall the iconic manga series (special color combinations and Golgo 13 engravings and branding). They are a part of Seiko’s Prospex (“Professional Specification”) range, which means that they can be used for professional purposes.
Based on the model from the Marinemaster Professional line, Seiko Golgo 13 Sea watch (Ref. SBBN023) is considered as a pro use saturation diver timepiece. It is distinctive by its robust “tuna can” case, with the diameter of 47 mm. It is crafted in black IP coated steel and provides the superb water-resistance up to 300 meters (990 feet).
The dial with white luminous hour markers and red accents on 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions is perfectly readable. At the 3 o’clock position, there is a day/date aperture. This special Golgo 13 Marine Master is powered by a Seiko quartz caliber 7C46 movement that guarantees five years of battery life. The watch comes in the limited edition of 500 pieces and it will be available for 126,000 Yen ($1580).
The Golgo 13 Air watch (Ref. SBDL011), also called the Golgo 13 Sky is based on renowned Seiko pilot watches. The most distinctive part of the watch is a rotating slide-rule bezel which provides the measuring of distance, fuel consumption, climb rate and airspeed.
This masculine, bold looking chronograph has a 43mm case, made of black IP coated steel, and a bracelet made of the same material. A black dial with striking red markers features chrono counters, an alarm sub-dial, as well as a date aperture. Inside the case, there is a Seiko solar quartz caliber V172 movement. This great pilot timepiece is limited to 500 pieces and will be available for 63,000 Yen ($790).
Finally, Seiko decided to create one Golgo 13 model with a mechanical movement. It is Golgo 13 Land watch (Ref. SBDC021), the version of the brand’s famous Fieldmaster line. Its case is very similar to the Marinemaser watch, with the same diameter of 47 mm (1 mm thinner), but it is highly distinctive by its rotating compass bezel and a bund-style leather strap.
The watch is powered with a Seiko’s 6R15 self-winding movement. It has superb readability and provides great water-resistance up to 200 meters (660 feet). The Seiko Golgo 13 Land watch is limited to 400 pieces and is priced at 115,500 Yen.
