The Swiss luxury manufacturer, Romain Jerome, has teamed up with Mo Coppoletta, one of the world’s most respected tattoo artists and keen watch collectors, for the new Tattoo-DNA Collection. The new RJ Tattoo-DNA Sailor’s Grave series is inspired by the sailor’s tattoo commemorating lost ships.

Since the 18th century, tattoos have been used as forms of talisman and protection. Sailors covered the ‘weak’ parts of their body, such as the heart or arms with symbols of strength intended to serve as lucky charms.
The sailor’s grave tattoos illustrate a sinking ship, still partly visible above the water, along with an anchor, life preserver or an eagle. The dial of the new watch is made in silver and it has been stamped, engraved and encrusted, thus giving an amazing sense of depth. Most of the dial surface is reserved for a large anchor with the sinking vessel behind it. The anchor serves to ward off bad luck and to protect the ship caught up in the storm.

The top part of the dial features dark clouds with bolts of lightning streaking downwards. Depending on the model, the lightning flash is colored in red or yellow lacquer, intensified with superluminova green emission. The lower part of the dial depicts violent waves of a heavy sea.
The RJ Sailor’s Grave watch is housed in a large-sized stainless steel case with the diameter of 50mm. Interestingly, it is the same case that was used for the Titanic-DNA watches. The hefty case comes with a black PVD-coated engraved bezel. The paws found on every RJ-Romain Jerome wristwatches are in steel or black PVD-coated steel.

The new Tattoo-DNA collection features four models, each produced in the limited quantity of 25 specimens. The case back of the watch comes with a tattoo motif, the collection’s name and the limited edition serial number.
The newest Romain Jerome model is constructed to resist water pressure of up to 30 meters (about 100 feet). It is secured to the wearer’s wrist with either a black nylon, a fabric strap or with a skin-tone colored leather strap tattooed by a notable tattoo artist, Mo Coppoletta.
The beating heart of the Sailor’s Grave watch is a Valjoux 7750-based movement. The price without taxes is approximately $18,450. With the Tattoo-DNA collection, Mo Coppoletta and RJ-Romain Jerome unite two artistically complementary worlds and also push the boundaries of classic watchmaking.
