Honoring Hillary and Tenzing, two of the world’s most famous mountaineering families, The Rolex Hillary Tenzing Edition Explorer Set nicely recalls the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, back in 1953. Along with three specially executed Rolex Explorer watches, each set contains various custom-made items and gear, celebrating the expedition that conquered the top of the world.
All packed in a stunning, hand-crafted wooden box which is exactly like the one that was used in the famous expedition by Mister Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, THE Set includes amazing items, such as an authentic silver mountaineering pin, a leather bound map of the original 1953 expedition route to Everest and a limited edition of the book Everest by the late George Band.
Specially crafted 36mm, 39mm and 42mm Rolex Explorers celebrate the success and the legacy of Hillary and Tenzing adventurers and their Rolex professional watches that were serving as very useful tools during the extreme explorations, showing exceptional durability and reliability. The first one brings back the original look of the model from 1953, while 42 mm Explorer II timepiece with the GMT function follows the code of the latest Rolex’s incarnation of the famous model that was presented last year, at the Basel watch fair. The Hillary Tenzing Edition is made in 88 packages. It is interesting that THE number 88/88 has already found its owner who bought it for $104,568 at Christie’s in Geneva, donating the complete sum to Hillary and Tenzing family foundations. Every other set will be available for about $40,000 and this price includes once-in-a-lifetime chance for future owners to join Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay’s (the sons of the legendry explorers) team on a private trek to Everest Basecamp, in May 2012.
Besides, on March 30, 2012, in Hong Kong, Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay will give an interesting insight into their fathers’ achievement, speaking about extraordinary endeavor that was required to enter the world’s roof. They will also exhibit the Rolex timepieces that were a part of the explorers’ equipment. This event will be followed by the great exhibition of vintage watches, with the professional guidance of the HTE initiator, Philipp Stahl.
