Although we have almost two months until Baselworld 2015 opens its door on March 19, some watchamaking brands preview their novelties that will hit the market this March. One of them is Harry Winston that will among other novelties present the Midnight Feathers Automatic 42mm Watch for men.
Harry Winston premiered its Feathers collection three years ago when it introduced the art of plumasserie – marquetry using feathers – on the dials of ladies timepieces, in which ethically sourced feathers are painstakingly arranged by a specialist in this art to create an astounding and unusual effect, with some motifs and colors based on those of the feathers themselves, as well as some specially colored. Now it is time for gentlemen.
Harry Winston Midnight Feathers Automatic is housed in an 18-karat rose gold case which measures 42.5mm in diameter and 9.1mm in thickness. Undeneath the front watchglass lies a dial made from domestic goose feathers dyed brown and black and assembled on the dial to create a vertically striped pattern that offers an appealing visual match for the gold case. Two slim rose gold hour and minute hands burst from the center of the feather tapestry. There are also letterings “Harry Winston” and “Swiss made” which are applied to the inside of the sapphire glass and not to the dial itself.
As you can imagine, each remige, or flight feather, is carefully chosen, shaped and then placed under a magnifying glass, so as to ensure optimal accuracy. The final result is amazing. The intense colors evoke amber-tinted vetiver roots, bulrushes and cedar wood.
The slim rose gold case also perfectly matches with a brown alligator leather strap. The case boasts the brand’s timeless design – three arches which are a tribute to the iconic gates of Harry Winston’s Fifth Avenue salon in New York.
From the rear, the see-through case back reveals the refined finishes of the caliber HW2008 mechanical movement which drives the hours and minutes functions with utmost precision. The mechanism consists of 186 individual components including the rotor in white gold. The impeccable automatic winding movement features the skeleton oscillating weight, the circular graining, the parabolic Côtes de Genève and the beveled bridges. All these details speak about Harry Winston’s proud heritage of watchmaking excellence.
