The latest evolution in a long line of iconic KonTiki diving watches is the new Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph Manufacture timepiece. As you might guess from its name, this vintage-inspired newcomer brings a chronograph complication to the most popular Eterna’s collection.
Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph Manufacture is equipped with the in-house caliber 3916A flyback chronograph movement which allows that at any time during operation, the chronograph can be reset to zero, and instantly start again.
The impeccable mechanism operates at the frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz) and it can store enough energy to keep the watch working for about 60 hours. The movement’s finishes include rhodium plating on the surface of the components, a microblasting decoration on the oscillating weight, with circular Geneva stripes, bead blasting and blued screws.
The movement is a part of the famous 39 family of Eterna’s movements and just like all the brand’s in-house movements, it boasts chronometer-level accuracy with seventy percent of the components being manufactured at the company’s Grenchen headquarters.
The Super KonTiki Chronograph is housed in a polished and brushed stainless steel case measuring 45mm in diameter and 16mm in thickness. The sporty case is topped with a 60-minute rotational bezel and it is protected from both sides with antireflective sapphire crystals which are flat rather than domed, thus offering the comfort on the wrist. The case boasts an exceptional level of water resistance – up to 200 meters (approximately 660 feet), which is made possible thanks to the screw-locked case-back and crown.
Underneath the front sapphire glass lies the dial which is marked with the brand’s signature large, triangular indexes, with legibility further improved thanks to Superluminova. The chronograph functions are displayed via a central second hand and a 30-minute sub-dial which is placed at the 3 o’clock position. Conversely, at the 9 o’clock position there is a small seconds counter. There is also a small date window which is located at the 6 o’clock position.
Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph is a rugged timepiece that features utmost precision and the highest quality. It is offered in two colors – blue and black. There is also a choice between a comfortable rubber strap and an elegant stainless steel Milanese bracelet. The first one can be purchased for 4,600 Swiss Francs (about $4,700), while the metallic bracelet version comes with the retail price of 4,800 Swiss Francs ($4,900).
The Eterna KonTiki collection is named after the famed ocean expedition helmed by Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian ethnographer, zoologist, and botanist who crossed the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft to demonstrate that ancient civilizations could have made such a crossing centuries ago. I recommend a very interesting Norwegian movie from 2012 about the 1947 KonTiki expedition.
This range has been one of Eterna’s most popular collections since its introduction, bringing elements of adventure, excitement and danger to mechanical watchmaking. The most popular Super KonTiki model was released in the early 1970s. This iconic timepiece was chosen by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for use by its Navy divers.
