Japanese brand, Citizen Watches, has decided to commemorate the 20th year of holding the prestigious title of the official timekeeper for the biggest tennis event on the American soil, the US Open. The sponsor of the fourth Grand Slam competition that has recently begun therefore launched a special edition of timekeeper that is dedicated to the anniversary.  This commemorative watch features the logo of the tournament on its white face and includes the Citizen’s well known Eco-Drive technology that enables the watch to be solar powered.

This unisex watch intended for tennis and Citizen’s aficionado does not introduce anything spectacular into the palette of products by the Japanese company, especially in the technical sense. It should be more looked upon as a nice commemorative piece which celebrates the successful cooperation between the US Open and Citizen. Besides, its desirability is slightly increased with the fact that it is constructed in a limited edition. Another attractive trait is its low price of just $150.

Citizen 20th Anniversary Eco-Drive timepiece runs on a Japanese-constructed quartz module which is placed into a circular shaped stainless steel housing. It is a unisex timekeeper but will be appealing only to women who prefer larger watches, since it has the diameter of 42 mm. The aesthetic appeal of the watch is improved with the inclusion of a nice looking textured fixed bezel. The white that features three-dimensional pattern in a shape of a ring is guarded with a mineral glass. The dial includes futuristic Arabic numerals and dot-shaped hour markers. Both numerals and markers are applied with luminous coating, just like its silver tone hands with red accents. The final touches on the face are a date indication and a red central second hand. Possible options for the wristlet of the commemorative Citizen watch are blue and white textured rubber bands. This timepiece is water proof to 50 meters.

Citizen involvement in the world of tennis reaches another landmark with this anniversary. The Japanese brand is not only connected with the tournament, but also with some of the top women’s players in the sport, Kim Clijsters and Victoria Azarenka. Both of these players are former number one players. While the former managed to win the US Open three times, the latter has had more difficulties on this tournament in the past, and will be looking to finally go through to the quarter finals this year.

The fact that Clijsters is officially connected with the Japanese watchmaker is once again underlined in the statement of Jeffrey Cohen, the President of Citizen Watch Company of America. In the press release where he comments the 20th anniversary of the Citizen’s status as the fourth Grand Slam’s official timekeeper, Cohen states: “We admire the unstoppable power and dedication of the athletes who compete at the US Open, including our ambassador, Kim Clijsters. Legendary matches at the US Open can be won and lost in a balance of a split-second play, and we take pride in our 20 year heritage of providing world-class accurate timekeeping.”
