Chopard has been the official timekeeper and sponsor of the Mille Miglia for the last 25 years. Now, the Swiss-based luxury watchmaker has partnered with the legendary Milan-based maker of bespoke sports car bodies, Zagato, to create the exceptional Mille Miglia Zagato Chronograph limited edition timepiece.
The cooperation between the Chopard and Zagato started when the co-president of Chopard, Karl -Friedrich Scheufele, met with Andrea Zagato during the start of the Mille Miglia classic race.
Considering the fact that both brands share the same values of excellence and creativity in creating technical masterpieces, this partnership is quite expected. The eponymous Milanese bodywork specialist has collaborated with legendary motor sport brands, such as Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lancia and Maserati. On the other hand, since 1988, Chopard has been producing a series of commemorative Mille Miglia timepieces.
This newcomer is crafted in the style of classic grand touring cars and it is produced in two limited edition series of 500 pieces each. One series features steel bodies with a DLC coating, while the other boasts rose gold bezels topped with a red insert showing a 24-hour dual-time index.
The new Mille Miglia Zagato is a chronograph that, besides a 24-hour hand for a second timezone, features a three-register chronograph layout, as well as a date display. The watch is officially certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
The new Chopard is housed in a round, sporty case with the diameter of 42,5mm and the thickness of 14.85mm. As I mentioned before, this novelty is available in two variants: one with a black DLC coating and a matching engraved steel bezel (ref. 168550-3004), whereas the other one has the addition of a rose gold bezel with a bright red aluminum insert for the 24-hour time indication (ref. 168550-6001).
On the right side of the case, there is a screw-in crown and two chronograph pushers. On both models, the upper pusher features a red-lacquered tip, a nod to the symbolic color of Zagato and the Mille Miglia.
Inside the watch, there is a self-winding chronograph movement that offers no less than 46 hours of power reserve. The mechanical movement oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).
The case is protected with glare-proofed sapphire crystal and it boasts a solid DLC-coated steel back with 1000 Miglia arrow logo and Zagato inscription. The water resistance of the Chopard Mille Miglia Zagato Watch is assured down to 50 meters (about 165 feet).
The attractive watch’s dial is encrusted with reticulated motif representing the Zagato’s logo in the form of Z. The fine gray technical grid pattern occupies the entire surface of the dial. Furthermore, the fonts on its dial, as well as on the bezel were particularly designed for the occasion.
The dial comprises a small seconds counter which is located at the 9 o’clock position, as well as two chrono counters. The 30-minute sub-dial is placed at the 12 o’clock position, while the 12-hours counter is situated at the 6 o’clock position. A date window is displayed at the 3 o’clock position.
A silver-toned or a black dial also features black or gold-toned hour and minute hands enhanced with Superluminova, as well as a red-tipped centre sweep-seconds hand and a black GMT hand with Superluminova tip.
Chopard Mille Miglia Zagato Chronograph is accessorized with a black barenia leather strap with either red or black stitching, ending with a DLC-coated steel folding clasp. This novelty will be available in Chopard boutiques and in the official online store Chopard E-boutique.
