This year’s Mille Miglia Watch that celebrates the legendary car race is for the first time tooled with the Chopard in-house movement certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). Since 1988, the Swiss watchmaker has been a partner and official timekeeper for the Italian Mille Miglia race and, every year, the lovers of motorsport-inspired watches look forward to discovering the new addition to the “Classic Racing” line.
Chopard Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition (ref. 168566-3002) boasts several design elements that refer to the cars that participated in “la corsa più bella del mondo” between 1940 and 1957, including a power-reserve indicator reminiscent of a petrol gauge, a flaming “Rossa Corsa” striking red dial and oversized Arabic numerals 6 and 12 which evoke the typical 1950s dashboards. To pay homage to the participant numbers located on the doors and bonnet of the competing vehicles, the date display appears clearly on a white background in the Mille Miglia red arrow-shaped logo.
As I have already mentioned, the new Mille Miglia timepiece is for the first time equipped with the in-house manufactured mechanism. The Chopard caliber 01.08-C is entirely developed, designed and assembled in the Chopard’s Fleurier Ebauches workshops. The self-winding mechanical movement is COSC-certified and it provides extreme accuracy in driving the hours, minutes and seconds indications, as well as a date and power-reserve functions.
A date window is placed at the 3 o’ clock position, while a power-reserve display is situated at the 9 o’ clock position. The impeccable movement is capable to store enough energy to keep the watch ticking for approximately 60 hours. The 31 jewels movement oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz).
This newcomer is housed in a sporty case which measures 43mm in diameter and 11.43mm in thickness. Besides the stainless steel model, Chopard also offers the 18-karat rose gold variant. The sturdy case is topped by a bezel with a black aluminium graduated insert.
The screw-down back guarantees water resistance up to 100 meters (about 330 feet). The reverse side of the watch also reveals the inscriptions “Mille Miglia” and “Brescia > Rome > Brescia” and it is fitted with a transparent sapphire crystal pane which displays the inner beauty of the Chopard movement and its openworked oscillating weight.
Finally, the Chopard Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition comes with a black Barenia leather calfskin strap which is secured by either rose gold or steel folding clasp. The new Mille Miglia is issued in the limited quantity of 1,000 in steel and 100 in rose gold.
