The L.U.C Lunar Big Date that was first introduced in 2009 now gets a new updated look. This year’s model boasts the 18-karat white gold case with a fine satin-brushed finish instead of 18-karat rose gold cases of previous versions. Although it houses the same movement – the L.U.C Caliber 96.20-L, there are a lot of significant changes.
This newcomer features a silver-toned subrust dial which is now set with Roman numerals instead of Arabic numerals on prior models. Also, sub-dials are more balanced. The most interesting detail on this watch is a large moon phase indicator which is located between 7 and 9 o’clock position. As it is reported by the manufacturer, the moon phase indication is so accurate that the discrepancy between the movement and the real lunar cycle amounts to just one day in 122 years. Achieving such precision in a timepiece is a very complex feat to which Swiss manufacturer has risen with significant talent.
The various moon phases are visible for both hemispheres via moon phase counter. Furthermore, the Northern part of the disc has the Big Dipper constellation, whilst the Southern part shows the Southern Cross. A small seconds counter is set between 4 and 5 o’clock positions and it is well-balanced with a moon phase display. There is also a large date display at the 12 o’clock position. The dauphine-styled hour and minute hands are filled with luminous coating for the best visibility under low light conditions.
Chopard L.U.C Lunar Big Date (ref. 161969-1001) features the same body proportions as previous models; 42mm in diameter and 11mm in thickness. The water resistance of the case is assured down to 50 meters (circa 165 feet).
The Swiss watchmaker attached this updated version of the L.U.C Lunar Big Date watch to a comfortable black hand-sewn alligator leather strap, fitted with a folding clasp in 18-karat white gold.
The self-winding L.U.C 96.20-L movement measures 33mm in diameter and 5.25mm in thickness. It is built on 33 jewels and oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz). The impeccable mechanism provides full 65 hours of power reserve and features bridges adorned with Côtes de Genève motif which can be seen through a transparent case back.
The retail price of the white gold L.U.C Lunar Big Date Watch is 24,490 EUR (approximately $ 33,430).
