The British watchmaker, Bremont, has presented its latest watch – Wright Flyer Limited Edition. It is an aviation inspired watch that showcases the brand’s first in-house movement – Bremont BWC/01 caliber with automatic winding. The vintage-styled timekeeper is dedicated to the Wright brothers who made the first functional aircraft. However, the Wright brothers were not just the inspiration behind the model. Every single copy of the limited edition actually includes a part from the wing of that original aircraft. Because of this, the vintage styled timepiece is historic in two senses. It honors a great historic feat of the mankind and also represents a milestone in the brand’s own history. The watch will be available in three variations. The most numerous of these is a polished stainless steel version with a black dial which is made in 300 copies. Additionally, there are two more versions with white dials: red gold version consists of 100 pieces, while the rarest white gold one includes 50 copies.
The English brothers, Nick and Giles, who run Bremont have opted to include their own first in-house movement in a product that honors one of the most influential duo of brothers in the mankind’s entire history. These are, of course, Wilbur and Orville Wright. These unlikely heroes of aviation from Dayton, Ohio were not scientists, but they were the first persons who managed to construct something that was but a dream to all generations before them. On December 17, 1903, their humble Wright Flyer, a biplane made of spruce and muslin was the first powered flying machine in the air. The flight was not that impressive in today’s standards since it lasted less than a minute, but it represents a birthplace of the aviation as it is today. The influence of the Wirght brothers in all subsequent endeavors can be demonstrated with the fact that even Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, carried a piece of the fabric from the wings of the Wright Flyer when he landed on the Earth’s satellite.
All Bremont Wright Flyer Limited Edition watches have the same cloth from the wing of the aircraft integrated in their rotors. This gives a special kind of appeal to the model since every single wearer of the model will have a fragment of a significant historic artifact on his wrist. As it has been pointed out, the watch is also a crucial milestone in the development of the watchmaker itself, simply since it displays its initial in-house movement. A large portion of functional parts (but not all of them) of BWC/01 caliber were made in the Bremont’s workshops located in Henley-on-Themes.
Caliber BWC/01 is a robust 33.4 mm wide mechanical movement with automatic winding. The 25-jewelled movement is made with Glucydur balance, Naviflex 1 mainspring and Nivarox CT balance spring. The hairspring of the movement with the frequency of 4 Hz is adjusted via a micro-metric screw. When the functions of the dependable caliber are concerned, it includes a small second counter. Additionally, the caliber is also supplied with an oversized date display. However Bremont opted to leave something for the next model and did not incorporate the feature in Wright Flyer Limited Edition piece. Furthermore, the first in-house movement by Bremont includes a bi-directional winding system which includes the mentioned rotor that integrates a piece of the fabric from the Wright brothers’ aircraft. Thanks to the efficiency of the winding mechanism, the supported power reserve measures to at least 50 hours.
As for the case of the new piece, it is made in a round shape and made in accordance with the brand’s trademarked Trip Tick construction. The diameter of the case is 43 mm, while its height measures to 14 mm. Moreover, it also incorporates a typical pilot’s onion-shaped crown and a domed, glare-proofed and scratch resistant sapphire crystal. More of the same transparent material can be seen on the exhibition case-back which is held in place with four polished headed screws. This was naturally the only right decision for the watch’s rear side, since it would be a shame not to be able to see the brand’s first own movement which is embellished with several different finishes and decorations. Waterproofness of the housing is up to 100 meters.
Bremont Wright Flyer Limited Edition piece features a retro design on its black or white dial. At the outskirts of the face, one can notice a railroad minute track and stylized Arabic numerals which were characteristic for the period when the Wright brothers first conquered air. Like the numerals, two central hands are made with luminous coating. The dial is completed with a silver-colored small seconds counter at the nine o’clock position. For the wristlet, Bremont picked an alligator leather strap which locks with a pin buckle. While the steel model with a black dial features an attachment in the same color as its face, two gold versions with white dials are paired with brown straps.
