The Grenchen-based watchmaking brand Breitling has released a new restricted army-inspired version of its timepiece from the Avenger series. The watch in question is called Super Avenger Military Limited Edition. Apart from its neat 24-hour dial with a rearranged layout of subsidiary counters, it is not that different from the series-released basic timepiece. Only other discrepancies are cosmetic in nature – the new 500-piece limited edition of the Breitling’s automatic chronograph has its steel housing treated with a highly resistant black carbon-based coating and it comes with a durable synthetic fabric strap.
This newly released timekeeper by Breitling is the special version of Super Avenger model which we reviewed some time ago in the article that covers this one and another very similar model from the Avenger collection. Though having the same features at that model, it should be said that it is actually a special version of Super Avenger II, since all the watches from the Avenger series now hold the “II” suffix due to the remake that the series received about a year and a half ago. As it has been said, the main difference between the new special army edition and the standard one is a different type of dial. New Super Avenger Military Limited Edition is distinguished by a Volcano black 24-hour dial. Unlike the basic version, the limited edition one is made with white luminous Arabic numerals (nine of them to be exact) in order to be more legible in spite of the 24-hour scale which does require a certain amount of getting used to and which cannot be read intuitively as the standard 12-hour one. This is especially the case in a highly stressful situation such as actual combat for which this watch is supposedly made, though this should be taken with a pinch of salt to say the least. Made also with luminous hour and minute hands and a red second hand, the new limited version has its subsidiary counters in a different arrangement. This time, small seconds, 12-hour and 30-minute chrono counters are placed at three, six and nine o’clock positions, respectively, while the date aperture sits jammed between four and five o’clock places (which are in this instance numerals eight and ten).
Additional new traits of the restricted military issue are a carbon-based black coating for its 300 meters water proof steel housing (with the width of 48 mm and the height of 17.25 mm) and the conjoined one-directional rotating ratcheted bezel, as well as a resistant synthetic strap in black color. All of the other features remain the same. The new watch likewise has a self-winding 25-jeweled Breitling 13 caliber with a power reserve of 42 hours (which operates at the brand’s common frequency of 4 Hz and thus allows its chrono function to be accurate within 1/4th of a second), double glare-proofed cambered sapphire crystal and a solid screwed-in case-back.
