Last month, Blancpain launched its latest watch that features a flyback split-seconds chronograph mechanism and a large date. The new L-Evolution-R Chronographe Flyback Rattrapante Grande Date combines carbon fiber and cutting-edge technology and reflects the brand’s strong commitment in GT racing.
The split-second chronograph allows you to record and display an intermediate time and to compare two time intervals, such as the times of two runners. The second complication shows the date in large figures which appear in two apertures situated side by side. It is possible thanks to a combination of two discs. The first one displays the tens, and bears the figures from 0 to 3, while the second shows the units, from 0 to 9. This complication demands perfect synchronization between the two discs.
Blancpain L-Evolution-R Chronographe Flyback Rattrapante Grande Date is equipped with the caliber 69F9 that provides 40 hours of power reserve when fully wound. The self-winding mechanism is built on 44 jewels and it consists of 409 components.
The split-second flyback chronograph movement is housed in either 18-karat white or 18-karat red gold case (their referent numbers are 8886F-1503-52B and 8886F-3603-52B). The dimensions of the case are 43mm in diameter and 16.04mm in thickness. The case incorporates carbon fiber bezel and case back, while the caseband and the lugs are in satin-brushed red or white gold (depending on the model). The integration of these two separate materials brings with it a design freedom, which is not often available with conventional case designs. The case is constructed to resist water pressure of up to 100 meters (about 330 feet).
Le Brassus-based manufacturer chose a modern carbon fiber dial for the new model that matches perfectly with the bezel and the case band. The first that you will notice on the dial are bold Arabic numerals 9 and 12 which are framed with striking red lines. The dial also comprises two differently shaped chronograph counters placed symmetrically at 3 and 9 o’clock positions.
The tips of the partly-skeletonized hour and minute hands are filled with luminescent substance, and the same material was applied on the hour markers, to improve readability in low lightening conditions. The inner, carbon fiber dial and the sleek, black hour track are nicely rounded with a 60 minutes track at the outer rim.
For the wristlets, Blancpain picked an alcantara leather strap with carbon fiber inserts that keeps the watch secured to the wearer’s wrist with a folding clasp.
