This Portuguese, as its name suggests, is equipped with a Minute Repeater function that audibly chimes on the hour, quarter hour and minute on demand. The repeater is activated by an eye-catching button set on the left side of the case. Every chime is characterized by its own distinctive and crystal-clear sound and frequency.
IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater Watch is available either in 18-karat red gold with the referent number IW544907, or in platinum with the reference IW544906. Both versions are limited to 500 individually numbered pieces.
This Portuguese is housed in a large-sized round case with the diameter of 44 mm and the thickness of 14 mm. The case incorporates a thin fixed bezel and a screw-in crown on the right side. On the opposite side, at the 9 o’clock position, there is a lever which allows you to operate by the minute repeater. According to the Swiss manufacturer, it took 50,000 hours to develop this highly complicated feature. When activated, the repeater chimes the time down to the minute, using separate harmonious tones: a lower-pitched of the two gongs for the hours, a double strike on both gongs for the quarters and a single strike on the higher-pitched gong for the minutes. Every gong is separately handmade and cautiously tuned for pitch and tonal purity.
The mechanism consists of over 200 individual parts that join forces together as if they were in a mechanical orchestra. This complicated feature represents one of the most remarkable achievements of the traditional horology and makes minute repeater watches highly expensive.
The Good Old Hunter Pocket Watch Movement
This IWC’s masterpiece is powered by the hunter-style Caliber 98950 pocket watch movement which comes with stylistic elements from the early Jones calibers. The hand-wound movement offers the minimum of 46 hours of power reserve when fully wound and oscillates at the speed of just 18,800 vibrations per hour. The 52 jewels mechanical movement’s nickel-silver plate with circular graining and bridge with the traditional Geneva stripes and gold-plated engraving can be admired through a transparent sapphire-glass case back.
Portuguese Minute Repeater watch is protected on both sides by sapphire glasses with antireflective coatings. Underneath the arched-edged front glass, there is a silver-plated dial with a railway track-style chapter ring. The sleek and uncultured dial comprises Arabic numerals and the seconds sub-dial situated at the 6 o’clock position.
The platinum model is attached to the wearer’s wrist with a black alligator leather strap with a pin buckle, while the red gold version boasts an elegant brown alligator leather strap. Both straps feel great on the wrist.
