For the fourth consecutive year, IWC Schaffhausen will be the “Official Festival Time Partner” of the Tribeca Film Festival. To celebrate this prestigious event, the Swiss manufacturer unveils its special edition of the IWC Portugieser Annual Calendar as a tribute to the Tribeca Film Institute (TFI). TFI is a non-profit arts organization that supports filmmakers with grants, professional development and resources, and helps students to discover film and filmmaking.
This year’s Tribeca timepiece was officially unveiled this month at the annual “For the Love of Cinema” gala in New York.
IWC’s Portugieser Annual Calendar Tribeca Film Festival 2016 (ref. IW503506) is equipped with the in-house manufactured caliber 52850 mechanical movement featuring an annual calendar at the 12 o’clock position which shows month, date and day in three separate, semicircular apertures.
Instead of the European date order, this special edition timepiece has the American standard in which the date is shown, which was not only necessary from a technical and design point of view, but it is also a homage to IWC Schaffhausen’s American founder F. A. Jones.
The precise and reliable mechanism with automatic winding is fitted with a Pellaton automatic winding system which has been improved, with practically wear-free parts crafted from black and white ceramic. The movement is built on 36 jewels, oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz) and it is capable to store enough power to keep the watch ticking for at least 7 days (168 hours).
The reverse side of the watch reveals the inner beauty, as well as a rotor with 18-karat gold medallion and Tribeca Film Festival logo. The case back also features the milled number “xx/50” which reminds that only very few watch aficionados will be able to get this stunning timepiece.
The Portugieser Annual Calendar Edition “Tribeca Film Festival 2016” actually reminiscent the original Portugieser from 1939 with its grooved bezel, railway-track chapter ring, narrow feuille-styled hands and Arabic numerals.
Underneath the front sapphire glass lies a stunning slate-colored dial which embodies the New York City streets to honor the Tribeca Film Festival, whilst the small seconds counter and the power reserve sub-dial are Bordeaux-colored, thus symbolizing the red carpets.
The watch comes in a round stainless steel case measuring 44.2mm in diameter and 15.3mm in thickness. The case construction provides water resistance up to 30 meters (about 100 feet). The new Portugieser Annual Calendar Tribeca Film Festival 2016 comes with an elegant black alligator leather strap, fitted with a stainless steel folding clasp.
This extra-special edition timepiece is issued in a limited series of only 50 specimens and it will be exclusively available for purchase at IWC boutiques within the United States for the retail price of $21,500.
Besides this special edition timepiece, the Schaffhausen-based manufacturer will show its support to the Tribeca festival by making a donation to the TFI. The $100,000 donation will be split equally between TFI and a filmmaker Matt Ruskinf who has been chosen by jury as this year’s “IWC Filmmaker Award” recipient.
