On the opening day of the WATCHES&WONDERS exhibition in Hong Kong, IWC Schaffhausen unveiled the new Portofino Midsize range of watches. The 2014 Portofino Midsize collection includes three new 37mm timepieces: the Portofino Midsize Automatic Moon Phase, the Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night and the Portofino Midsize Automatic. Besides the Midsize collection, the Swiss watch manufacturer also unveiled three new Portofino Automatic models which are housed in larger 40mm cases.
The watch that immediately drew my attention is the new Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night with a 24-hour day/night display and a second time zone.
This newcomer is available in two versions, offering the choice of stainless steel or 18-karat red gold cases (their referent numbers are IW459101 and IW459102). The watch shines not only because it features 78 sparkling diamonds, but also because of its mother-of-pearl dial. Each of the two models is encrusted with 66 diamonds around the bezel, and 12 more in the mother of pearl dial to mark the hours.
The 24-hour display is set into a ring inside the dial, with an hour by hour adjustable hand for indicating. A second time zone is a beautiful and quite practical complication. The hour, minute and seconds hands show local time, while the blue hand on the inner 24-hour ring displays the time at a second location. Furthermore, to easy the reading of time in the second location, the lower half of the ring, from “6 a.m.” to “6 p.m.”, is colored in white, whilst the top half, from “6 p.m.” to “6 a.m.”, is colored in blue, thus allowing the wearer to easily differentiate between day and night.
The crown makes it possible to set the time separately on the dial and in the inner 24-hour ring on fast and easy way. By pulling the crown out to a specific position, the wearer can adjust hour and minute hands after arriving in a new time zone. The small blue hand stays in position and continues to display the home time. When it is needed, the crown can be pulled out to a second position that offers the hand to be adjusted in both directions – backwards and forwards – in one-hour steps.
The new Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night watch is equipped with the caliber 35700 mechanical movement with the balance frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and 42 hours of power reserve. The self-winding mechanism is built on 27 jewels and it is protected against the ingress of water up to 30 meters (100 feet).
The new Automatic Day & Night watch from IWC’s Portofino Midsize range is teamed either with a blue or black alligator leather strap from the House of Santoni. It is also available with a Milanaise mesh bracelet in steel or red gold for those who prefer bracelets. This novelty perfectly combines discreet luxury with the suave urbanity of a contemporary generation. It is a perfect choice for people who travel a lot due to business, as well as for jet setters and night owls as the manufacturer noted.
