At the new Watches and Wonders fair in Hong Kong, IWC unveiled two new timepieces: Portuguese Hand-Wound Eight Days and Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date Watch. Both novelties offer impressive 8 days (192 hour) of power reserve.

IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date Watch
Aesthetically, the new Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date reminds to the Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days Watch, but with the addition of the large date aperture which is placed on the upper part of the dial, and takes the center stage.
This newcomer is tooled with the in-house manufactured caliber 59230, which represents a further development of the 59000 caliber family. The hand-wound movement with its large bridges and plates is created to satisfy the most demanding clientele.
A big date window displays the date on two large, highly legible digits. This is achieved through two synchronized discs: the first one that shows the tens from 0 to 3, and the second one that displays the single digits from 0 to 9. Besides a big date, the new watch boasts a massive 8-day power reserve. After 192 hours, the renewed energy can be provided by simple winding of the crown.

A power reserve display is located between 8 and 9 o’clock positions, while a small seconds counter is situated at the 6 o’clock position. The impeccable mechanical movement is built on 30 jewels and has a beating rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).
A stylish announcement of discreet luxury
This newcomer is available in either 18-karat white gold or 18-karat red gold version (their referent numbers are IW516101 and IW516102). The large-sized case measures 45mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness. The white gold model sports a slate-colored dial, rhodium-plated hands and indices and a black Santoni alligator leather strap with a white gold pin buckle, whilst the red gold model matches a silver-plated dial, gold-plated hands and indices, as well as a dark brown leather strap with a red gold pin buckle.

These straps are exclusively produced for the Schaffhausen-based watchmaker by a renowned Italian shoe manufacturer Santoni. Thanks to the special and complicated manufacturing process, Santoni makes straps with the leather which looks like as if it had already enjoyed several years of use by a careful owner, although it is absolutely new. Yet another trademark of the Italian manufacturer is the orange-colored leather lining found on the inner surface of the strap.
IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date Watch is shielded on both sides with antireflective sapphire glass with arched edge. The new Portofino comes with a transparent sapphire-glass case back and it has water resistance of up to 30 meters (100 feet).
