This year, IWC Schaffhausen pays homage to the impeccable flying skills of the Swiss aerobatic squadron by launching the new Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition “Patrouille Suisse”. This special edition timepiece is limited to 250 specimens.
This year, Switzerland and the aviation world are celebrating a double milestone: the 100th anniversary of the Swiss Air Force and the 50th anniversary of the Patrouille Suisse whose pilots have acted as airborne ambassadors to Switzerland, demonstrating unmatched accuracy and perfection far beyond the country’s borders.
IWC Schaffhausen honors this exceptional team and their 50th anniversary with an exclusive version of the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph (ref. IW377805), complete with a personalized dial and an engraved case back.
The new Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph features a cockpit design with colored highlights. Its displays are large, functional and clearly laid out. The aviator styled gray dial features hands and indices which are coated with white luminescent material that guarantees high legibility under all kinds of lightening conditions. An altimeter-shaped date display at the 3 o’clock position further underscores the cockpit instrument-inspired look. Three signal red elements provide highlights: the small red seconds hand, which displays normal running; the red stopwatch seconds hand; and the small triangle on the triple date window.
IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition “Patrouille Suisse” is powered with a rugged caliber-79230 chronograph movement that allows the recording of single and aggregate times up to 12 hours. The self-winding movement built on 29 jewels oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz) and it has a power reserve of 44 hours.
A special edition watch that honors the fabulous Patrouille Suisse is housed in an attractive shot-blasted stainless steel case which measures 46mm in diameter and 17.5mm in thickness. This newcomer has all the credentials of a watch designed for flying. Its case is protected with convex sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating on both sides which secures the watch from sudden falls in pressure. The watch is also tooled with a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. The case is constructed to resist water pressure of up to 60 meters (circa 200 feet).
The case of the new IWC timepiece incorporates a screw-down crown, two chronograph pushers, as well as a third push-button which is located at the 10 o’clock position. This pusher can be used to stop the split-seconds hand at any time and then pressed again to resynchronize it with the stopwatch seconds hand, making it ideal for timing laps or intermediate times.
The case back of the watch is decorated with an engraving of three jet fighters that allude to the Northrop F-5E Tiger II in which Patrouille Suisse pilots fly in tight knit formations at speeds of up to 1,000 kph. There is also the inscription “TRIBUTE TO PATROUILLE SUISSE” and the consecutive numbering in a form “x/250” which indicates the special limited edition.
This newcomer comes with a black soft strap with back-stitching, fitted with a folding clasp in shot-blasted steel. From this month, this authentic aviation chronograph is available at IWC Boutiques in Switzerland and Swiss retailers, but pretty soon, it will be available at IWC Boutiques worldwide. The new IWC’s watch once again reflects the special ties between the Swiss watchmaking brand and the world’s elite pilots.
