The new IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition “Antoine de Saint Exupéry” (ref. IW371808) features a very busy dial with three subsidiary dials, day and date windows, and seven hands. The watch has a tobacco brown dial which is complemented by a matching Santoni leather strap, both recalling Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s flying suit.
The new Double Chronograph is powered with the caliber 79420 mechanical chronograph movement and, as its name suggests, the watch is a Double Chronograph.
The watch comes with the split-seconds or rattrappante chronograph function. The word “rattrapante” comes from the French and actually denotes that the two chronograph seconds hands start simultaneously, and one of them can be stopped using the push-piece located at the 10 o’clock position for an intermediate time reading, while the stopwatch hand continues to run. That allows the wearer to record two separate times and the process can be repeated as many times as you like. The impeccable mechanism oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz) and it is capable to store enough energy to keep the watch ticking for at least 44 hours.
The sub-dials at 6 and 12 o’clock positions display aggregate times up to 12 hours, whilst the counter located at the 9 o’clock position shows the small seconds. As you look closer, in the lower counter there is an A. for Antoine. The dial also comprises day and date displays which are situated traditionally at the 3 o’clock position. The light-colored hands and indexes are coated with luminescent substance and provide perfect legibility in low lightening conditions.
The reverse side of the watch reveals the engraving of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft. This airplane was the one in which a French writer and flying pioneer, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, took off on 31 July 1944 to make what turned out to be his last flight, over the south of France.
As you can see on the image above, the switches and buttons are all ergonomically shaped to provide the best functionality.
