Inspired by the vintage model that was greeted with much acclaim when it was launched in the middle of the last century, Breitling’s watches with the designations Superocean Héritage 42 and Superocean Héritage 46 are two models with the identical technical features. The only difference between them can be deduced from the names of these models. The smaller one features the diameter of 42 mm, while the bigger one is 4 mm wider (Breitling used to have a model with the smaller diameter of 38 mm, but this version is not in the supply anymore). The pair of watches features a nostalgic, minimalistic and classical style that replicates the general features of the vintage model that was used as the inspiration, and includes a mechanical automatic movement.
These models have a pure design and very simple and readable dials with hour markers (and with subtle minute markers on the flange with luminous dots behind each of the hour markers, except for the 15, 30, 45 and 60 minute positions which are represented with small Arabic numerals), and a date aperture at the very bottom of the face. One of the striking details is the arrow shaped tip of its hour hand, borrowed from the watch it was modeled upon. Both hour and minute hands are luminous for improved visibility, unlike the sweeping second hand that is also present. The classic-styled dial is completed with the vintage logo of the company that was also used in the original model from the 1950s.
Superocean Héritage 42 and Superocean Héritage 46 tiempieces include unidirectional rotating ratcheted bezels with gear-shaped edge for an additional aesthetic impression. The bezel in both of these models can be black, green or bronze, and is paired with a dial of the same color, or with a Stratus silver face. In each of the cases, the dial is guarded by a cambered sapphire crystal that is glareproofed on both sides.
Diving Capability and No Complications
The only material option for cases is stainless steel. Superocean Héritage 42 has the width of 42 mm, and the thickness of 12.95 mm, while the overall weight of the watch is 86.65 g (around 3 oz.). On the other hand, Superocean Héritage 46 is as it is visible from its name 46 mm wide. The thickness of the timepiece is 13.6 mm and the weight is 109.2 g (around 3.85 oz.). Both models are made with mechanical self-winding caliber B 17 (base movement ETA 2824-2) movements. As it is customary for the models of the Swiss watchmaker, this caliber runs on the high frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 v.p.h.). The minimalistic approach and the design of the watches (and the choice of the movement, of course) is the reason why these timepieces include no other complications except the date display. Featured power reserve for the pair of watches is minimally 42 hours. Still, there are some additional advantages to these models. Their construction allows water resistance to 200 m (660 ft.) which classifies them as diving watches. This sort of use is further enabled with screwed-in case back, screw-locked crown with two gaskets and their unidirectional bezels.
Possible choices for bracelets include three materials and four different types. It is possible to acquire these models with a leather strap (brown, gold, blue, green or black), Ocean Racer rubber band with perforations (black, blue or bronze) and a rubber Diver Pro II band with raised central segment (black or blue). The final option for the bracelet, mash steel Ocean Classic, is additionally in accordance with the overall vintage theme.
