As the name of the model and of the collection suggests, Breitling Professional Skyracer is a timepiece with a clear aviation purpose, as it is so often the case with products by the famous watchmaker from Grenchen. The distinguishing feature of the model is the presence of a two hand chronograph totalizers which allow very simple readings of the elapsed time for measurements that exceed one hour. Considering the history of the Swiss company, where the launch of the first ever self-winding chronograph has a special space, it comes as no surprise that this model is made with exactly this type of caliber. Another recognizable trait of the timekeeper by Breitling is the inclusion of a rubber-molded bezel with a slide rule that is for this model available in various colors.
The first feature of this watch that immediately draws attention is the nontraditional layout and functions of the chronograph subsidiary dials. While the 60 minute counter shows the elapsed time in a regular manner, the other sub-dial that sits at the nine o’clock place includes two hands that show hours and minutes, which enables the simplest possible readability of the elapsed time for the longer intervals. The dial that includes these counters is made with a sundial pattern and has luminous hands and hour markers. As it is more and more often the case for the company’s aviation-inspired timepieces, this model is also made with a rubber-molded bidirectional rotating bezel with a slide rule. The potential buyers of this item can decide among black, green or red bezel which are usually paired up with a black dial. The only exception is the model with a black bezel and a Marine blue dial. It is rather important to note that the dial of Breitling Professional Skyracer timepiece also includes a date aperture, located at the bottom of the dial.
The eccentric representation of chronograph counters that in a way defines this model is enabled through the utilization of Breitling B 27 mechanical automatic caliber (base model ETA 2892-A2). As it is customary for models by the Swiss watchmaker, the selected movement runs on the high frequency of 28,800 vph. Besides, as it is almost exclusively the case with all Breiling chronographs, it includes the precision of 1/4th of second. The self-winding movement B 27 incorporates 38 jewels and offers a power reserve that lasts for at least 42 hours.
There are no surprises when it comes to the selected case shape and material. Breitling Professional Skyracer watch is fitted in a circular stainless steel case that is 44 mm wide and 16 mm thick. In accordance with the watchmaker’s high standards of manufacture, the face of the timepiece is protected with sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. The aeronautical background and inspiration is visible also on the screwed in solid back case which features engravings with the most relevant symbols of the Ground Air Visual Signal Code. Without the bracelet, the timepiece weighs 124 g (4.37 oz). Speaking of bracelets, it is possible to choose among three types of straps with this model. Two of them are made out of rubber. Those are Ocean Racer band that fastens with a pushbutton folding clasp and Diver Pro strap that closes with a tang-type buckle. The final option is Professional steel bracelet with three rows of links. There is also a limited edition of this watch. It is made with a steel case that includes a black finish, and has a green bezel and Ocean Racer Strap.
