New Breitling Avenger Hurricane is a very interesting piece, especially for the aficionados of the brand, since it offers several traits that have so far been unseen in other products of the watchmaker. For starters, it is made in an extremely large 50 mm wide package made of a proprietary new material that was developed by the Grenchen firm. The new all-black piece with a military-style 24-hour display also premiers new Breitling B 12 movement.
The latest novelty by Breitling is somewhat different in a sense that offers many new qualities, as opposed to the brand’s common practice of making more or less just cosmetic changes when it comes to the launch of novel models. This one is pretty different than the rest of the available watches in the brand’s offer when it comes to both styling and performance.
The first thing that grabs one’s attention is the sheer size of the piece. Breitling Avenger Hurricane is a true extra large piece with the diameter of 50 mm. The size is somewhat determined with its features, or to be more precise with its 24-hour display. Having an oversized dial helps to fit twice as much numerals as it is normal on the watch’s black face. The case is made with a screw-locked crown with lateral reinforcements. Moreover, the construction features a uni-directional rotating bezel with engraved numerals and rider tabs which is a pretty widespread feature when it comes to the Breitling watches.
On the front of the watch there is a cambered sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coatings on both sides for better legibility. The same material is likewise used on the case-back of the piece which is water resistant to 100 meters.
Brielting Avenger Hurricane is special since it is the first ever piece to be created in Breitlight material which was specially developed by the brand. It is high-tech material with supreme traits. For starters, it is exceptionally light. It is 3.3 times lighter than already lightweight titanium and as much as 5.8 times lighter than steel. Additionally, the reduced weight does not imply reduced resilience. On the contrary, Breitlight high-tech material is also exquisite when it comes to dealing with scratches, traction and corrosion. It is also anti-magnetic, resilient to temperature shifts and hypo-allergenic. On the wrist it feels warmer than metal and finally, it has an interesting spotted appearance.
New B 12 Caliber
Apart from being the first model made with the housing in a new material, Breitling Avenger Hurricane also shows off a new caliber for the first time. The movement in question is Breitling B 12 which is to be honest another one which utilizes B 01 as its base. The COSC-certified chronometer is a new type of movement and should not be confused with the previously used B 12 movement with Lemania based movements, which was seen in now discontinued Navitimer Cosmonaute models (the current version of the mentioned watch which is pretty similar in terms of supported features is now made with Breitling B 02 caliber).
As it is common for the movements by the brand from Grenchen, it is a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement which operates at the frequency of 28,800 vph. Its stop watch function features displays for 12 hours, 30 minutes and 1/4th of a second. The movement integrates 47 jewels in its construction and has a power reserve of 70 hours. What sets the new movement mostly apart from the rest in the brand’s offer is its 24-hour display shown on the black dial with military-type stencil numerals and yellow accents. It also possesses the commonly used dial display shown in an aperture which stands between four and five o’clock positions (or in this case, at the nine o’clock place).
The watch which is intended to be an instrument for pilots is another novelty to be supplied with Military Rubber type of strap. It is a comfortable wristlet which is made of a combined yellow-rubber interior and black-colored military textile with high resistance.
All in all, it is a pretty notable and exciting new piece with several novel traits. When it comes to its downsides, these may be its peculiar type of dial which takes some time to adjust to, as well as its extremely large diameter that is not really suited for anyone’s wrist.
