The Shelby Cobra has an important place in the U.S. just like the Porsche 911 in Germany or the Ferrari 250 GTO in Italy, for instance. Last month, the iconic car model – CSX 2000 – was sold for $13.75 million including auction fees at the largest collector car auction house in the world, RM Sotheby’s, thus becoming the most expensive American car sold at an auction. In order to honor the most important modern American sports car, Baume & Mercier unveiled the Capeland Shelby Cobra CSX 2000 unique piece.
The very first Shelby Cobra is built in 1962 by the American motor sports genius, Carroll Shelby. The historic model served as the development prototype for what would become the Shelby Empire.
The car arrived in the U.S. as an engine-less AC Ace, and Shelby installed a 260 cubic inch Ford V8 within hours of picking it up. Once the vehicle was completed, it was sent to magazines for instrumented testing. There is one quite interesting media-savvy detail about this legendary car model. Namely, the CSX 2000 was repainted a different color for each test to trick journalists into thinking Shelby had several cars.
The one-of-a-kind Capeland Shelby Cobra CSX 2000 Watch from Baume & Mercier honors the spirit of endurance, performance and innovation embodied by the legendary car builder, Carroll Shelby. This unique piece is housed in sporty, yet elegant 44mm case crafted from 18-karat rose gold. The case is fitted with a “chevé” antiglare sapphire crystal.
The famous Shelby’s cobra emblem is featured on the counterweight of the chronograph hand, whilst the hours and minutes hands are shaped like a steering wheel which is yet another node to the legendary CSX 2000 roadster. Underneath the front sapphire glass, lies a domed ash-toned dial which has been enhanced by blue nuances on all timing functions. Furthermore, the stunning dial comprises the two white Shelby Cobra stripes generally found on competition cars.
As we might expect from the Swiss manufacturer, this piece unique is powered by a Manufacture La Joux-Perret 8147-2 mechanical self- winding flyback chronograph movement. The Swiss-made mechanism offers the highest precision and the utmost reliability.
From the rear, the case back is engraved with the words “Shelby® Cobra CSX 2000, Unique Piece”, while the sapphire crystal with Carroll Shelby’s signature provides a chance to enjoy the inner beauty of the impeccable movement.
The last but not the least, this exceptional timepiece comes in an opulent presentation box which is engraved with the commemorative inscription and comprises a luxurious travel pouch.
