On occasion of Baselworld 2017, Chopard showcased its latest L.U.C model made of ethical Fairmined rose gold. The ultra-thin timepiece named L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined contributes to better working and living conditions of the miners who extract the raw material.
In 2013, Chopard initiated its “Fairmined Project” through a partnership with the South American NGO – Alliance for Responsible Mining, looking to usher in a more just form of distribution. The so-called eco-friendly certification “Fairmined” ensures that the gold was extracted ethically and also guarantees that miners and the environment are properly treated.
Chopard L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined is not only made of Fairmined gold, but also stamped with the prestigious Fleurier Quality Foundation label. This exceptional novelty is housed in 18-karat rose gold case with a mixture of brushed and polished finishes (satin-brushed finishes on the sides, while the case back and the bezel are polished). The elegant case measures 40mm in diameter and only 7.20mm in thickness.
Underneath the front sapphire glass lies a slate gray dial stamped with a sunburst texture which is said to be inspired by the raw composition of gold nuggets extracted from mines. As you have probably noticed, the small seconds counter is off-centered at the 7 o’clock position, just like the crown which is set at the 4 o’clock position, thus offering a subtle asymmetric appeal of the new Chopard watch.
The new L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined is equipped with the caliber 96.09-L self-winding mechanical movement which is tooled with two barrels, wound by a 22-karat gold micro-rotor in 22-karat gold, thus providing a decent power reserve up to 65 hours when fully wound. The mechanical movement oscillates at the rapid frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz). The precision of the mechanism has been certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
Furthermore, from the rear, the future owners of this model can enjoy the inner workings of the impeccable caliber, such as the bridges adorned with a deep Côtes de Genève motif. The water resistance is assured down to 30 meters (approximately 100 feet).
Chopard L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined (ref. 161945-5001) is teamed up with a black, hand-sewn alligator leather strap, dyed with plant-based pigments, ending with a rose gold pin buckle. The watch is issued in the limited quantity of 250 pieces. The retail price is $18,480.
