The famous Swiss manufacturer Oris has presented one of its most technically advanced timepieces named Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme. This exceptional newcomer celebrates the company’s partnership with the Williams Formula 1 racing team.
The partnership between the Swiss watchmaking brand and the motorsports icon started in 2003 and since that time Oris has launched several Williams-branded watches. The latest was officially presented at Baselworld 2016 exhibition and represents the most innovative Williams timepiece so far.
The case of the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme watch is crafted from carbon fiber and titanium. Actually, the Swiss watchmaker has developed and patented a carbon fiber manufacturing technique derived from processes used by its long-standing Formula 1 partner. This patented process has never been seen in watchmaking industry so far.
This high-performance carbon fiber composite boasts three key benefits. The first two are rigidity and water-tightness and the third came in post-production. Processing carbon fiber after it has been molded and hardened is labor-intensive and expensive, but this patented technique overcomes this. To make this unique type of carbon fiber, sheets of woven carbon fiber reinforced polymer are layered by hand in individual molds in two steps and after that twice hardened under 50 meters of pressure at 130°C in special ovens.
The usage of fiber waves instead shreds guarantees the solid material, with no hollow spaces. This amazing process is so refined that it brings a completed case shape and finished surface. The titanium case back and sapphire crystal can be fastened directly onto it. The only steps which are left afterward are shaving off redundant material and milling the holes for the crown, push buttons, and bracelet. Each of these case middles is individually and manually crafted.
The multi-piece case incorporates titanium crown and pushers coated with black DLC (diamond-like carbon). The 44 mm case is shielded with a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating inside, and from the rear there is a screwed titanium case back with black DLC coating and see-through mineral crystal. The case construction provides water resistance of no less than 100 meters (approximately 330 feet).
The beating heart of the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme (ref. 01 674 7725 8764 RS) is Oris Caliber 674 mechanical chronograph movement, based on ETA’s 7750 caliber.
The black dial comprises applied numerals, two chronograph counters, a small second counter and a date window at the 6 o’clock position. The blue color of the Williams racing team has been used for the chronograph hands and sub-dials to complete the sporty design of the new Oris watch. The black hour and minute hands are filled with white Superluminova to provide the outstanding legibility both during day and night.
This special edition timepiece comes with a black rubber strap, ending with a black DLC-coated titanium folding clasp. The watch will be available in June 2016 for the retail price of CHF 4,100 (approximately $4,250).
Oris also unveils a limited edition piece to honor the achievements of Williams Formula 1 driver Valtteri Bottas. The Williams Valtteri Bottas Limited Edition is produced in the limited quantity of only 770 pieces and features the same characteristics as the Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme.
There are only two distinct features: instead a sleek, black dial, it has a carbon fiber dial and the reverse side of the watch is engraved with 77, Bottas’s car number, and his name. This limited edition timepiece (ref. 01 674 7725 8784 RS) will be available from September for the price of CHF 4,350 ($4,520).
